Simple past – one event finished

 

Irregular Verbs

buy – bought

take – took

put – put

cost – costs

 

Regular Verbs – usually add ‘ed’

walk- walked

talk- talked

work – worked

clean - cleaned

learn – learned

paint – painted

comb – combed

mop- mopped

need – needed

 

Examples:

cost The lunch special costs $8. Her lunch cost $9.

 

cost(noun) The cost of the car is $3500.

 

hit The door hits the wall every time. I hit my head on the kitchen cupboard.

Why did you hit me? Why are you hitting me?

 

stand – stood

She stands by her friend. She stood by the tree.

PHRASAL VERB stands by -  supports

Mel stood by her friend during her divorce.

 

stand up / stood up

I stand up on the bus when there are no seats.

I stood up on the bus today.

 

sing / sang

The little girl sings all day long.

Justin Beiber sang a song to the audience.

enjoy / enjoyed

She enjoys living in Vancouver.

The audience enjoyed the show.

 

teach / taught

We teach our children to be good and kind people.

You taught your son to speak Cantonese.

 

 

lay AND lie – tricky

 

lie – you lie down on your own, e.g. to take a nap

My dog lies down on the floor.

My dog lay down on the floor last night.

 

lay- you place something down

She lay her keys down on the counter.

She laid her keys on the counter yesterday.

lay put

She put her keys on the table.

Put the milk in the fridge, please.

 

The chicken laid two eggs today.

lie – tell an untruth

The kid lied to his mother about the cookies.

 

You can tell the meaning from the sentence, the context.

 

These are three verb tenses that we have been working with so far:

SIMPLE PRESENT

PRESENT PROGRESSIVE

SIMPLE PAST

 

Examples:

SIMPLE PRESENT   She looks after her daughter every day.

PRESENT PROGRESSIVE   Dawn is looking at a picture of her sister.

SIMPLE PAST   They looked at some nice clothes yesterday.

 

Exercise 1 – simple past verb tense
