for this class), discuss, explain, describe the main points of the essay

(300-350 words) not long, short compact paragraphs, twice as long as one paragraph, not a book

English 12 – paragraph – “at least 150 words”

                     - essay – 5 paragraphs X 150=750 words, “at least 300 words”

**

The paragraphs in an essay should be shorter than the stand-alone paragraphs we have been doing.

**

Refer to “The Bare Bones of a Five-Paragraph Academic Essay”

Yesterday’s work was to review that.

A teacher will give reasonable topics in class.

“Explain how modern nuclear power plants are safer than those build a generation ago.” Unreasonable topic

“Why did you choose to live in BC?” Reasonable topic.

“Explain why the US went off the Gold Standard in 1971.” Unreasonable topic

“How to Be a Good Friend.” Reasonable topic

As you move to higher, more specified levels of education, your essay topics will become more specialized.

Build vocabulary! It is good to have five or six synonyms for common words.

I am teaching the most basic kind of essay. This is like following a recipe. When you get comfortable writing essay after 3-4 tries, then you can follow your own style.

The style that I am teaching is very basic and clear. It is simple and ‘easy’ to do. You can get fancier with your essays later.
