Vocabulary

3.    stance- She changed her stance on legalized marijuana. She used to think it was a bad idea, but she has changed her mind.

4.    credibility- Vladimir Putin has lost most of his credibility in the West.

My doctor has credibility when it comes to health matters.

credible(adj) She is a credible scientist. She is very knowledgable.

Her opinion on vaccines is credible.

incredible- same root

My Uncle Joe’s opinion on vaccines is not credible. He has no education or training. He just looks on Youtube.

7.    essentials- necessary things   When you go camping, you bring just the essentials.

8.    neutral- in the middle, on the fence, not part of a conflict

We wife and my son were having an argument. I stayed neutral. I stayed out of it.

I took my wife’s side. I took my son’s side.

Most Western countried have not stayed neutral on the war in Ukraine. They have sided with Ukraine. Other countries have sides with Russia.

9.    anticipate- look forward to something  We are all anticipating nicer weather in the next few weeks.

anticipation(n) – emotion about waiting   She is feeling a lot of anticipation waiting for her boyfriend to ask her to marry him.

10.                       contradict- to say the opposite of what someone else says

I left the mixer in the sink again.

No, I didn’t.

Don’t contradict me in public.

HW   A. Role-Play

Choose one of the secenarios. Come up with three or four reasons why we should accept your opinion/argument.

Write them down on paper or email them to me by tonight.
