English Foundations 5/6
Good morning, everyone.
This is our B Group.
From Monday, we are all together.
We will get started at 8:30.
On Monday, we will be back to school like normal- M-F.
Remember: All of these notes will go onto the blog at the
end of class everyday.
My blog- haleyshec.blogspot.com
Today’s agenda
1.
Review of first day
Any questions from Wednesday?
2.
Quizzes and tests
3.
Ice-breaker- Interviews
4.
Begin overview of sentences
5.
Game or knots
On Fridays, I want to do something
unusual- game? teach you some knots? For next Friday, bring a piece of rope,
about two feet long.
Questions from yesterday? Anything unclear?
Don’t be shy about talking or asking questions.
Pass-in quizzes and tests (begin next week) – choice – submit
on paper or email
* Writing quizzes and tests on paper
– regular 8 ½ X 11 inch lined paper
- doublespace
your writing, write on a line, skip the next line
* I will
write my comments and corrections on the empty lines
-keep your
writing between the margins (red lines)
- Write in pen, not pencil. Black
ink gets higher marks than blue
ink (a little joke). Please, no red
ink or pink ink or green ink or
silver ink.
- Write your full name, class, and
date in top righthand corner, please.
* Writing quizzes and tests on computer.
We do not have computers for
students in our little school. You would have to bring your own computer. $$
Phones can be harder to work with,
but some students seem to be able to do it.
- Write the quiz or test using a
word processor. Using MSWord is easiest. There are other free programs that you
can use.
- Save the file as an attachment.
Email me the attachment.
REVIEW
1.
Write your quizzes and tests using a word processing
program like Word, Googledocs, Wordpad or Textedit. We can talk about
these later.
2.
Save your quiz or test file on your computer. This file
will be the attachment.
3.
When you save your file, give your file a meaningful
name.
e.g. Don’t name it “Document 15”
Name it “Your
name, class, time, Quiz#”
“Joe
Chen, EF3, 11:00, Quiz2”
4.
Attach your quiz or test file to your email.
5.
In the subject line of the email, write “Your name,
time, class, Quiz#”
6.
Send the email.
7.
I will get your email a few seconds later.
8.
I will read your writing and make comments.
9.
Then I will return your quiz or test to you by email.
10.
You can open the file and read my comments.
There are a few ways to send quizzes and tests by email.
FREE ADVICE #2- Don’t avoid email because you don’t know how
to do it. You can learn it.
Two choices for writing quizzes and tests– paper or email.
Which one do you think you will do?
Either one is ok.
-Use a legible font size. font- the type of letter, font
size- 8-72
Use a 14 to 16 point font size. 16pt
Use a 14 to 16 point font
size. 14pt
Use a 14 to 16 point font
size. 8pt Too small!
Use a 14 to 16 point font
size. 48pt Too big!!
14-16 is a nice legible font
size. 12pt- very common but I find it too small
14-16 is a nice legible font size.
* Good for all email correspondence or letters.
- Pick a nice-looking font.
e.g. Calibri Arial
Times New
Roman Georgia
Not good choices: Snap
Goudy Stout
Comic Sans Jokerman
Choose a font that looks professional.
I used to use Calibri. Yesterday, I switched to Yu Mincho
This is my new
favourite font. I like it. It looks classy and sophisticated (fancy and nice).
- spacing – double spaced or 1.5 spaced
Example paragraph (single spaced):
Canada is one of the best countries
in the world to live in. First, Canada has an excellent health care system. All
Canadians have access to medical services at a reasonable price. Second, Canada
has a high standard of education. Students are taught by well‐trained teachers
and are encouraged to continue studying at university. Finally, Canada's cities
are clean and efficiently managed. Canadian cities have many parks and lots of
space for people to live. As a result, Canada is a desirable place to live.
Example paragraph (double spaced):

Example paragraph (1.5 spaced):
Canada is one of
the best countries in the world to live in. First, Canada has an excellent

1.5 space is a nice compromise
between single and double space
