When you read the sentence, leave a little pause. How long should the pause be?

You don’t say anything for a semicolon.

Your punctuation will determine how much space (time-pause) you put between words.


HIGHER LEVEL semicolon – shows that the two clauses are closely related, talking about the same thing.


I like cats. She likes dogs. – 2 simple sentences, separate

I like cats; she likes dogs. – shows they are connected


My sister is 45 years old. She is nurse. – 2 simple sentences, separate

My sister is a nurse; she works in a hospital. – ideas are closely related
