EF34 11:00 Feb25

Good morning, everybody.

We will get started at 11:00.

Today’s agenda:

1.    Review Test#1 paragraph from yesterday.

2.    Complex sentences- adverb clauses

Test#1 Paragraph

Write a 100-150 word paragraph: “What is your favourite holiday?”

STRUCTURE OF A PARAGRAPH

Topic sentence

Supporting sentences

Concluding sentence

My comments and reminders:

- 14-16 point font A few students wrote their paragraphs in very small font, and I couldn’t read them. Can you read small font easily? I can’t either. If you send me writing with tiny font, I just won’t read it.

- one block of text, don’t divide into sections

Notes on sentence writing

1.    Don’t begin sentences with SOBA. It is too casual for school writing. It is ok for informal, friendly writing, but not for school or business.

For example

My whole family gets together at Xmas. And we have a big feast. RW

THREE SOLUTIONS

My whole family gets together at Xmas. We have a big feast.

My whole family gets together at Xmas, and we have a big feast.

My whole family gets together at Xmas. Also, we have a big feast.

And we have fun. XXX

‘and’ change to ‘also’

So we got to church. XXX

‘so’ change to ‘therefore’

But I don’t like mashed potatoes. XXX

‘but’ change to ‘however’

Or we stay home and play games. XXX

‘or’ change to ‘on the other hand’ ‘alternatively’

SOBA is for compound sentences.

SV, SOBA SV.

2.    run on sentence RO

For example:

People will have a week holiday, they don’t need go to work.

CS comma splice – a comma is not strong enough to put between sentences

SOLUTIONS

People will have a week holiday, so they don’t need go to work.

People will have a week holiday. They don’t need go to work.

Example:

Chinese New Year is a traditional day for us, it is the most anticipated day for us. CS comma splice- a comma is not strong enough

SOLUTIONS:

Chinese New Year is a traditional day for us, and it is the most anticipated day for us. One compound

Chinese New Year is a traditional day for us. It is the most anticipated day for us. Two simples

COPYING/ PLAGIARIZING/ CHEATING ON TESTS

When you do a test, so not copy from the internet. Do not copy from a book. Do not get your Uncle Joe to do your test. Do not use a dictionary. Do not use a spellcheck.

Use your own English. It is the way to learn.

When you do your driving test, were you allowed to check the book for answers?

If you get caught, you will get a 0 on your test.

We are here to learn. Students who get 6/6 or 1/6 on the tests– all students are welcome in this class.

We are here to improve our English. Cheating is not a way to improve.

We will try another paragraph next week.
