Gold

Topic sentence- introduces the topic of the paragraph ‘gold’, ‘valued’

-always begin your paragraph with a topic sentence

Supporting sentences- exaplain the reasons why, discuss the topic in detail

Concluding sentence- restate the topic sentence, wraps up the paragraph

Gold is a precious metal that is valued for two important reasons. First of all, gold is beautiful and does not corrode. Therefore, it is good for jewelry, coins, and ornaments. Gold never needs to be polished and will remain beautiful forever. For example, an antique gold coin looks as beautiful today as the day it was made. Secondly, gold is very useful to industry and science. It is used in many applications, such as photography and dentistry. Also, gold is used in astronauts' suits. Astronauts wear gold-plated heat shields for protection when they go outside spaceships in space. In conclusion, gold is treasured not only for its beauty but also for its usefulness.

          I will give you an easy general topic. You will plan and write a short paragraph of about 100-150 words.

e.g. Discuss how the US dropping the gold standard in the 1970s has affected world economics. Just joking!

TOPIC: What is your favourite holiday? Why?

 

PLAN

Decide on your holiday. Thanksgiving

Aim for three reasons. Three is a good number to shoot for.

1.    family gathers together

2.    big feast, lots of different kinds of food

3.    not commercialized like Christmas, just about family and food and being thankful

 

WRITE

Grabber- attention getting sentence, friendly way to begin a paragraph or essay

Topic sentence- opening sentence, tells the reader what the paragraph is about. The topic sentence is linked to the question.

Supporting sentences- talk about your points, probably three points

Concluding sentence – wrap up, nice ending, repeating the idea in thea topic sentence

          There are many holidays throughout the year that I enjoy. However, my favourite holiday is Thanksgiving Day. I like it for three reasons. First of all, Thanksgiving is a great wonderful opportunity for family members to gather together and enjoy each other’s company.

Secondly, we all can enjoy a huge feast and eat a lot of different kinds of traditional and modern food. Finally, Thanksgiving has not been commercialized like Christmas, so we can focus on the holiday itself and not feel like we have buy anything. For these reasons, Thanksgiving has always been my favourite holiday. Enjoy your Thanksgiving no matter what kind of food and company you will enjoy.
