 Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Today’s agenda

1. Review Test#1 – paragraph

2. Begin complex sentences- adverb clauses

Paragraph:

Topic sentence – directly connected to the question

TIPS to connect your TS to the question:

1. mirror vocab from the question

What is your favourite holiday?

My favourite holiday is Eid Fitr.

2. Use synonyms

favourite holiday – most like, most enjoyble, celebration, day off

The celebration that I enjoy most is Easter.

Supporting sentences- explain or describe your three points- 3 is a good number to aim for

Concluding sentence

(150-200 words)

Grabber – teach later

My notes on the writing:

1. Quality of the sentences- simple, compound, complex

2. Format of the paragraph – one block of writing, not 5 or 6 sections

I have concerns about students (you) cheating on tests.

- on line, not in class, cameras on

- plagiarism – copying writing from a book or the internet and passing it

in

Last week, I was marking personal essays that were written by students. Several of the essays were copied from the internet. That is cheating. That is plagiarism. The students who cheated got 0%. Also, I wrote a letter for their permanent file. Most importantly, I don’t trust them anymore.

- using dictionaries during tests –  That’s cheating. Use your own

vocabulary. For example, when you do your driving test, are you allowed to check the driving book quickly to refresh your memory?

Maybe I will not be able to tell if you used a dictionary or a spell check.

You will know that you did it.

It’s not a happy topic, but it is a problem that comes up.

Plagiarized:

My favorite holiday is New Year’s Day. New Year’s Day comes once in a year and is a special day throughout the world. All people in the universe recognize this day because it is the beginning day of the year, which is the first day of January. The weather is usually cold by that period. On the 31st of December, I usually gather my family together to give praises to God starting at 11:00 pm until 1:00 am. At 10:00 am, I usually go to church with my family. After arriving home from church, my family and friends usually have a get together party with various kinds of food that would have been prepared to eat, such as pounded yam, rice and beans, and turkey. After eating, I used to give out some gifts to my friends.

0/6

Write a letter for their permanent file.

The trust is broken.

Plagiarism and cheating

You should not be using a spell checker or grammar checker during tests. Turn them off.

Rephrasing is fine. Copying is not.

Citations – teach later

Paragraph format:

-indent the first word

-one block of writing

I  want to talk about one of my best and favorite holidays in Persian culture. It is called “ Shab- e-Yalda”( Yalda night). Persian  people celebrate it every year on December 20/21;  this is the last day of fall and the longest and darkest night of the year. On this night family and friends get together to talk and dance, eat and drink the whole night. Beside the variety of Persian  food, red fruits like watermelons and pomegranates always serve this night. People believe the colors of these fruits are symbols of the glow of their life; also eating nuts make them warm and strong. The special part is reading poetry of “ Hafez”, after midnight. Every person, one by one, makes a wish and asks for a poem. They chose a poem by the chance and this poem will blessed their life for the next year. In  fact we celebrate this night, because after “Yalda”  all the nights get shorter and shorter, and spring is coming.

holiday- vacation or statutory day off

My favourite holiday was when I went to Montreal on a business trip.

weekend = holiday? , day off

holiday = religious day?

humanism – not religion
