LITERARY TERMS-

SETTING

What is the setting of “Roses Sing on New Snow”?

- suggests story is from the past

When you read a story, sometimes you have to do some detective work to figure out the setting.

CHARACTER – How is Maylin characterized? How do we know about her personality?

- read the story and get ideas about who she is by her actions and words

MY NOTE: Root of racism. Assuming someone is simple and flat because of one or two characteristics. We all have to think about that when we look at people in the world. Never judge a book by its cover.

Titanic Rose is dynamic, mother, fiancé, Jack are static

“Roses Sing on New Snow” Maylin and governor are dynamic, father and brothers are static

Does the ship’s captain change? No. He is static.

Does Rose change? Yes. She is dynamic.

In your life, are you dynamic or static?

- we grow as we get older

- you moved to a new country, lots of change

Change is good! If we don’t change, we can’t handle the challenges in our life in a healthy way.

Maylin is a strong confident woman who changed how she presented herself in her community and family.

Tomorrow, we will do PLOT and CONFLICT.
