LITERARY TERMS-

SETTING

What is the setting of “Roses Sing on New Snow”?

setting shown early in a story

WHERE? “father’s restaurant” “New World”, North America

“Chinatown” (p1)

NOTE: Paul Yee is from Vancouver

We can deduce the setting from the story if we are careful readers and know something about history and the world.

CULTURE old Chinese culture in relation to sons and daughters, treated differently, valued differently

- many cultures value boys more than girls

- suggests story is from the past

When you read a story, sometimes you have to do some detective work to figure out the setting.

You have to be a knowledgeable reader. You have to pay attention.

CHARACTER – When you are reading a story or watching amovie, how is the characters characterized? Looks? Words? Actions?

How is Maylin characterized? How do we know about her personality?

- direct commentary by author

CHARACTER

*major/minor

Titanic Jack and Rose- major characters

ship’s captain, other guests – minor characters

*protagonist/antagonist

protagonist – “pro” good, positive

antagonist – “anti” bad, negative

Maylin – protagonist

the governor - antagonist

possibly the father

The protagonist will be a major character. e.g Rose in Titanic, Harry Potter

Batman – protagonist, major character

The Joker – antagonist, major character

*round/flat

round - complex character

flat – simple character

MY NOTE: Root of racism. Assuming someone is simple and flat because of one or two characteristics. We all have to be careful and think about that when we look at people in the world. Never judge a book by its cover.

*dynamic/static

Titanic Rose is dynamic, mother, fiancé, Jack are static

“Roses Sing on New Snow” Maylin and governor are dynamic, father and brothers are static

Does the ship’s captain change? No. He is static.

Does Rose change? Yes. She is dynamic.

In your life, are you dynamic or static?

- Some of us grow as we get older.

- you moved to a new country, lots of change

Change is good! If we don’t change, we can’t handle the challenges in our life in a healthy way.

Transition of identity. Migration of identity.

You don’t have to be the person you have been all your life. You can change if you want to.

Pick and choose the best of yourself.

Maylin is a strong confident woman who changed how she presented herself in her community and family.

Tomorrow, we will do PLOT and CONFLICT.
