Good morning.

Today’s agenda:

1. Review of sentence types
2. Sentence combining. Combine the sentences in the “Try Out Your Skills” exercise.
3. Descriptive writing – adjective forms


Tomorrow - descriptive sentence combining

This is the most important lesson from the whole course:

Sentence types:

** Simple – one clause
S V
“I am staying in today.”

** Compound – two simple sentences put together
- joined with , SOBA

“I am staying in today, but you are going out.”

** Complex – two clauses, one simple sentence, the other dependent clause
- adverb clauses - because if when
“I am staying in today because I am waiting for a repairperson for my furnace.”

Three types of complex sentence:
- adjective clause – who that which
“I am waiting for a repair person who will fix my furnace.”

- noun clause – feel think say believe know understand
- that why how
“I think that the repairperson will arrive before noon.”


Three types of sentences: simple, compound, complex
These are very important. These are essential.




Try Out Your Skills

Combine these pairs of sentences. You can add, remove, or change
the order of words.

1. You should dress warmly. It's getting very cold.
2. Carla came to the party. Rick didn't come to the party.
3. I’m taking some time off in July. It will be warmer then.
4. I put the children to bed. They were tired.
5. Sandra goes to school at night. Connie goes to schooI at night, too.
6 I'd like some sugar in my coffee. I'd also like some milk.
7. The thief was charged as a juvenile. She was young.
8. Jack is a good friend. He always helps me.
9. I will call you before I leave. I'm going to leave this evening.
10. We're going to the factory. Greg works there.
