- Concluding sentence
You can begin your paragraphs with a topics sentence – get right to the point.
You can also begin your paragraphs with a grabber. The grabber comes before the topic sentence.
grabber – optional, attention-getting device, use it to get your reader’s attention, make them want to pay attention to your paragraph, makes it more interesting, engaging

Would you have been brave like Viola Desmond if you had been in her shoes?

1. short personal anecdote (story, reflection)
I have never been in a situation like Viola’s; however, I would hope I would be as brave as she was if I ever were put in her position.
Grabber; topic sentence
When I was growing up, I faced a lot of discrimination in my home country. I know that I am brave like Viola was.
2. refer to history
Positive change has only ever come through bravery of a few people. I know that I am brave like Viola was.
The history of our society/world/country is full of example of brave people, such as AAA, BBB, CCC and DDD.
3. statistic/fact/number
20%, 50%
4. ask a question, the answer is the topic sentence
Are you a brave person? Have you ever been in a situation where you had to stand up for your rights?
5. famous quotation from a famous person
Look up quotations. Commit some to memory.

Franklin P. Jones said “Bravery is being the only one who knows you’re afraid.” Viola Desmond must have been afraid when she walked down the aisle of that movie theatre; nevertheless, she acted bravely. I would hope I would be as brave as she was if I ever found myself in her situation.

6. an idiom or an expression from your language
7. General to specific statement
funnel
We all face situations in our daily life when we can be brave or cowardly. When Viola Desmond faced a circumstance like this, she chose to be brave.  I hope that I would be brave like Viola was if I were put into her predicament/position.

Ideal paragraph for school:
Grabber/Hooks (optional) – choose one
Topic sentence – on topic
Supporting sentences – specific, explain, describe or argue the topic sentence
Concluding sentence

Look up grabber/hooks on the internet. Get some ideas.
Grabbers/hooks are really useful for essays.

Pronouns – be clearer with your pronouns
he, she, we – not clear who you mean

If I was in her Viola’s shoes I would have done what she did because they White people in her community did bad things to them, the Black people in her community and she Viola wanted to show them that they shouldn’t do bad things to them just because they were different from them. The thing she did was brave. I would be brave, too. We are all equal and no one should do something bad to anyone for any reason about anything because everyone is the same as anyone in everything everywhere always.

This is a funny ridiculous exaggeration, but you can see the point.

My friend has said that I should visit Central Park at least once.
has said – present perfect
My friend said that I should visit Central Park at least once.
said – simple past

I think that practicing every day is a great idea.
