Overview of the 12 verb tenses in English:

 

SIMPLE PRESENT- habitual action, everyday, usually, often

habit- do everyday, regular action

          I get up early.

          She drinks green tea.

truth, true, fact

          He lives in Burnaby.

          Victoria is the capital of BC.

          The sun shines every day.

SIMPLE PRESENT – does not mean right now

I drink coffee. not now necessarilty, habit, normal everyday action

There are two basic ways to do simple future tense:

I’ll teach it my way. You grammar book might explain it a different way. Use whichever explanation makes sense to you.

 

1.    be going to- already planned it, decided already

Our classmates are going to get some coffee together after class.

I am going to watch my son play volleyball tonight.

She is going to buy a new car next week.

 

2.    will- decide right now, on the spot, no previous plan

Who can help me?  I will.

We divide up the chores: I’ll sweep. Sarah will mop. Hui will vacuum the carpet.

You will wash the dishes. She will do the laundry.

I will go to Montreal next week. Not the best way to say it, but everybody will know what you mean.

Review, practice, and use these until you know them cold.

IDIOM know something cold- automatic, don’t even have to think about it
