“Family Relationships”

A.   Vocabulary

 

-Male- man, men

mother’s or father’s father

husband- spouse, partner

VOCAB pet name – affectionate name- sweety, honey, dear, darling

VOCAB spouse- husband or wife

son or daughter- offspring, child

I have two offspring.

brother or sister- sibling

She has three siblings.

He has only one sibling.

uncle – your father’s or mother’s brother

English has only one word “uncle”

You can sign a prenuptial agreement before you get married to protect your own money.

engaged- planning to get married soon

separated- problems in the marriage, living apart, not divorced

divorced- marriage is over, done, ended, Game over!, legally divorced

Divorce can be very difficult on children.

They signed a divorce settlement.

VOCAB alimony- money you pay your ex

He will pay alimony to her.

 

bachelor- single men, never married

Are you a bachelor?

widow- husband has died

widower- wife has died

He is a widower.

immediate family- parents and children, nuclear family

extended family- uncles, aunt, grandparents, cousins, etc

ancestors- your family from the far past

His ancestors come from the Middle East.

Her ancestors come from Africa.

My ancestors come from Ireland and Scotland.

orphan- a child without a mother or father

The orphan baby girl was adopted by a family.

twins- two babies

identical twins- look the same

triplets

maternal(adj)- mother  maternity(n)

maternity ward- the area of a hospital for mothers to have babies

She is in the maternity ward having her baby.

VOCAB ward- area of a hospital, special department

paternal(adj)- father

He took a paternity test. He checked if he was the real father of a baby.

paternity test- DNA test, blood test
