New cell phone policy in BC schools, from BC Ministry of Education

Personal Digital Device Usage

Personal digital device- phone, tablet, laptop

“To foster a safe and focused learning environment for students, the use of personal digital devices, that distract from learning, such as cell phones, tablets and electronic devices, are restricted during school hours and on school property. Educators and school staff will continue to model digital citizenship in the classroom and avoid the use of personal digital devices for non-instructional purposes.”

We can’t be glued to out phone in class.

IDIOM glued to their phone

 Not allowed:

1.       Recording the class (audio or video)

2.       Translating apps (in real time)

3.       Phones can be out during quizzes or tests.

You can use our phone responsibly a little bit as a learning assistant, to help you.

The use of personal devices is permitted under the following circumstances:

For educational purposes, as directed by the educator in the classroom.

For health and medical purposes as outlined in an Individual Education Plan or Student Safety Plan.

The expectation is that students will follow the personal digital device policy and school guidelines.

This is mostly aimed at K-12 students, teenagers. Adults have this problem, too.

Be careful! Phones are highly addictive. They are designed to be time wasters. Somebody is making $ from your time and attention.

*** IMPORTANT ***

Cell phones or other electronic devices are not allowed during quizzes and test. They must be put away, out of sight. If it’s out visible on the table, the school policy is to give a 0 for the quiz or test. If you forget, then remember. Put it away in your pocket, in your bag.

If you really have a serious emergency or something important, let me know.

*** Class Blog ***

Everything that goes on this screen, I will put up on our class blog.

CLASS BLOG: haleyshec.blogspot.com

It’s on the course handout.

You do not have to make notes as we go because everything on the screen will go onto the blog. Nevertheless, making notes during class is an excellent way to improve retention. The best students usually make notes during a class or lecture. They review their notes on their own, within 24 hours. It refreshes the knowledge. It helps to make the new information permanent.

VOCAB retention(noun) – retain, remember (verb), recall(v), bring to mind

re- again  return, remember, review, recognize, repeat, renew, recycle

Studying a language is very good for the brain.

It makes your brain strong and healthy.

It is like going to the gym and exercising, but for your brain.

Difficult cognitive work can stave off dimentia. -good for our brain

Alzheimer’s disease- dimentia, lose their mind

The blog can serve as your notes.

Making your own notes in a class helps you to retain information.

***CLASS BLOG

I will update my blog every day after class. You can check it and review what we did in class.

Reviewing material is the best way to help remember new information.

You can check the blog as much as you like. There is no sign-in, no password. It’s all public and accessible.

You can keep using it after the course is over.

I am planning to keep my blog up forever.

Our blog is a tremendous resource that you can use.

My class blog goes back 11 years.

My blog is searchable. You can search for something specific that you are looking for.

The search bar is in the upper lefthand corner of the main blog screen. Search for whatever you want to learn more about.

The search bar might not work on your phone.

Click on “View web version” on the bottom of the page.

You will see a tiny search bar in the upper left corner.

***ACTION***

I will post out notes so far on the blog.

Go to the blog now. Make sure you can open it.

haleyshec.blogspot.com

Any trouble getting in? We’ll figure it out.

If yes? Good!
