Run-On Sentences and Comma
Splices
A run-on
sentence is two simple sentences joined together without
punctuation.
e.g. It’s rainy I took my umbrella.
The way to
fix a run-on sentence is to rewrite it as a simple,
compound or
complex sentence.
FIXES:
It’s rainy. I
took my umbrella. SIMPLE
It’s rainy,
so I took my umbrella. COMPOUND
It’s rainy; I
took my umbrella. COMPOUND
It’s
rainy;therefore, I took my umbrella. COMPOUND
I took my
umbrella because it’s rainy. COMPLEX- ADVERB CLAUSE
I took my
umbrella since it’s rainy. COMPLEX- ADVERB CLAUSE
You can’t fix
a run-on sentence using a comma. If you put a comma
between two
simple sentences, it is a comma splice. A comma is not
strong enough
to separate two simple sentences.
e.g. It’s
rainy, I took my umbrella. COMMA SPLICE- AVOID DOING THIS!
