Marks day

I will not teach on the final day. I have to finish all of your marks, report cards, etc.

On the final day, I can meet with each person to discuss your progress and final marks.

Advice on Public Speaking

 

It’s very normal to feel nervous about talking to a group.

Everybody is scared or at least wary of speaking in public.

#1 fear of most people is public speaking

If you feel nervous, you are in good company.

 

when faced with an opportunity to do some public speaking-

autonomic responses – unconscious, automatic body responses, we can’t control them

-                      nervousness

-                      heart racing

-                      upset stomach

-                      knot in your stomach

-                      butterflies in your stomach

-                      jittery, shaky hands

-                      sweating

-                      clammy hands

-                      vision blurred

-                      tunnel vision

-                      voice cracks

-                      have to go to the bathroom

-                      red face, blush

-                      mind goes blank

-                      feel faint

 

These are normal and predicable responses.

We are all in the same boat here. same shoes

We’re all on your side.

Everybody wants you to do well.

 

Try to relax. We are interested in what you have to say.

If you mess up, just take a moment. Keep going. Don’t apologize.

 

 

The Tips I Give My Children for Public Speaking

1. Deaf grandmother- speak up. speal a bit louder than usual, slow down a bit- listen CBC radio announcers

2. Good dog- energetic tone, animated

3. Magic eye – eye contact

Phrasal Verbs

verb + preposition = new meaning

 

changing the prepositon will change the meaning

 

wake + up = wake up  She wakes up at 7:30.

wake up – one meaning

 

put up – He will put up a picture on the wall.  hang

He will hang a picture on the wall.

 

hang + up-  Hang up the telephone when you are finished talking.

I hung up on the telemarketer. ended the phone call

 

phrasal verb  verb + preposition

 

hang + out  -spend time socially with people

Maris likes to hang out with her friends at the mall.

The kids hang out after school.

 

give up – quit  He gave up his dream to become a lawyer.

give in – allow defeat, stop fighting  Dave gave in to his wife in their argument about washing the dishes.

 

give out- pass out, hand out   The church was giving out free lunches to people last weekend.

The teacher gave out feedback slips to the students.

You can get take out food from a restaurant. take-out or eat-in

Shira took out the garbage and recycling.

I took my wife out for a nice dinner.

 

take up – begin doing something, learn how to do something

Maris took up swimming last month.

Kurdonya decided to take up painting as a hobby.

 

 

go for- put in a lot of effort, do work to achieve a goal, try to reach it

Shira will go for becoming a lawyer.

If you want to get better at speaking, you have to go for it. Don’t allow your shyness to hold you back. Get out of your comfort zone.

Phrasal Verb 1

1.wake up, woke up, will wake up, be going to wake up

get up?

2.get up- get out of bed

get out- leave your apartment

I got up at 8am, and I got out of the house at 8:45.

3.hurry up  Hurry up!

4.get on   She got on the plane/bus/train/Skytrain/subway/ferry at 6pm.

She boarded the plane at 6pm.

He got in the car.

She got in the Uber.

The kid get on his bicycle/skateboard.

 

*There no simple rules for prepositions and phrasal verbs.

6.turn on – He turned on the TV/radio/computer/laptop.

 

turn up- increase volume, arrive, get to a place

My mother turned up the TV because she could not hear.

Maris turned up at the party three hours late.

You turned up to class 20 minutes early.

When you take a domestic flight, you should turn up at the airport 90 minutes early.

7. Sit down and relax. Have a seat. Take a seat. Make yourself comfortable.

8.takes off- remove clothing

She took off her hat when she came in.

He tooks his tie off at the party.

9. Put on your glasses. She put on a necklace. She put on a bracelet/watch/bangles.

10.We got off the bus/train/plane.
