SIMPLE SENTENCES

-one independent clause, one main clause

S+V.

Styles of simple sentences: SV   SSV   SVV   SSVV   SSSV   SVVV   Imperative(command)   Interrogative(question)

 

COMPOUND SENTENCES- 2 simple sentences connected together

-         coordinating conjunctions , FANBOYS for and not but or yet so

I like dogs, but she likes cats.  SV, SOBA SV.

EXAMPLES:          I like dogs, but she likes cats. COMPOUND – two main clauses

                               I like dogs but don’t like cats. SIMPLE – one main clause

 

FANBOYS

*TRUTH We rarely use ‘for’, ‘nor’ and ‘yet’.

e.g. She is happy today, for her son is visiting her. UNUSUAL

She is happy today because her son is visiting her. USUAL- COMPLEX SENTENCE- ADVERB CLAUSE

‘nor’ neither nor, either or

e.g. She does not speak French, nor does she speak German. UNUSUAL

She does not speak French or German. USUAL SIMPLE SENTENCE

She does not speak French and or German.

She speaks French and German.

I have been to China and Japan.

I have never been to China nor or Japan. ‘nor’ is unusual, low frequency

 

COMPOUND SENTENCES – FANBOYS SOBA

SOBA , so , or , but , and HIGH FREQUENCY

It is late, so she is going to go to bed.

We can do a test, or we can keep practicing.

He’d like to visit his parents, but he has no vacation time left.

She likes to go hiking, and he likes to go swimming.

 

She is going to go to bed. three-word modal + ‘to go’

She is going to bed. present progressive verb tense

IDIOMS
