My name is ABC. I am from Sudan. I come from Ethiopia.

I am 30 years old. I have 30 years.

I have five siblings. I have two brothers and three sisters.

I work in construction. I work in a warehouse. I am a driver.

I don’t have a job right now. I am looking for work. I am looking for a job.

I have three children. I have two kids. My daughter is nine, and my son is five.

A.Warm-Up Questions

1. employer, hire(verb)- give someone a job

An employer hires people for a job.

boss, manager, owner

 

A job applicant needs a resume.

If you want to get a job, you have write a resume.

resume- a piece of paper that shows your work experience, education, skills, languages

“I speak English and Farsi.” “I am fluent in Spanish.”

fluent- high level , speaking perfectly

 

“I am conversational in English.”

conversational – ok for talking

“My English is getting better all the time. I am working on it all the time.”

 

“I had work experience in my home country as a teacher/nurse/engineer/contruction.”

“I worked in contruction in my home country.”  

 

“I have no experience Canadian.” Sounds like Spanish or Farsi

“I have no Canadian experience.”

 

“In my country, I worked in Home Depot/Ikea/Amazon.”

“I am an assistant chef.

“Experience from other countries is not accepted in Canada.”

“I worked in cleaning.”

“In my home country I worked in contruction as an electrician.”

 

skilled trades- electrician, plumber, gasfitter, firefighter, hairdresser(women), barber(men), painter, HVAC- heating and air conditioning, carpenter, janitor, flooring, mechanic, formatting?, tiling, tailor

 

B. Vocabulary Review

The boss at a school is the principal.

I was a supervisor on construction sites in my country.  

A boss oversees the workers.

hire- give a job to someone

fire - lose job, take a job away from someone “You’re fired!”

She is working on her resume.

Dialogue Reading

Interview- a meeting about getting a job

 

Interviewer- a person who is giving the job, the employer

Applicant- a person who is looking for a job

 

An applicant is looking for a job. She applies for a job.

apply(verb)- ask to receive a job or service

He applied for a passport. She will apply for Canadian citizenship.

 

dialogue- conversation between two people

 

Read over the dialogue for a few minutes.

Then we take turns reading the dialogue out loud.

 

Who wants to be the Interviewer?

Who is going to be the Applicant?

 

qualifications- necessary education and experience

 

Expand the dialogue. Let’s try some of the variations on page 3.

 

I’m in charge of hiring

Variations:

I’m the HR manager. HR- human resources

I do the recruiting.   recruite(verb)- look for new workers

 

 

tech-savvy (adjective) – very knowledgeable about computers and technology

 

perks- benefits – medical, dental, vacation, parking pass

 

performance bonuses – extra money for good work

She got a bonus for her hard work.

 

Vocabulary Review

1.    It’s nice to meet you. Pleasure to meet you. Good to meet you.

2.    Do you have any questions for me about the job?

3.    I have several years of office experience. I worked in an office.

I was an office manager. I was a secretary/ receptionist.

4.    I’m in charge of recruiting. I’m in charge of HR. I’m in charge of hiring.

5.    Are you tech-savvy? Are you familiar with MSWord?  Are you proficient with MSExcel? I am very familiar with MSOffice.

6.    We provide medical and dental coverage.

7.    I was a supervisor at my last job.

8.    Do you offer health benefits?

 

Adjectives- descriptive words

-reliable He is a reliable person. You can rely on him. He will do what he says.

-tech-savvy – good with technology, computers, software

-well-organized – organized, not messy

-open-minded – imaginative, think about new ideas, open to new ideas

You have to be open-minded when you come to a new country.

-outgoing- talkative, happy to talk with people, not shy

She is a very outgoing person.

-detail-oriented- someone who likes to focus on details

-punctual- on time, not late

It is important to be punctual for work.

-creative – inventive, imaginative, can create new things

-patient- does not angry, stays calm, does not get upset

The mother is very patient with her son who is learning to tie his shoes.

-hardworking- work hard, not lazy

He is a very hardworking man.
