“Family Relationships”

Handout about vocabulary regarding family relationships

 

Male Relationships

-grandfather- your father’s father   ‘ apostrophe- shows belonging, shows possession

-great grandfather- your father’s grandfather  

CASUAL grandpa, granddad

-great great grandfather- your grandfather’s grandfather  

 

-ancestors- your relatives from many generation ago

 

uncle- your father’s brother, your mother’s brother- same word

uncle- your aunt’s husband

I was talking to Uncle George.

-grandson- -your son’s son, your daughter’s son

-nephew – your sister or brother’s son

-in-law ‘by marriage’-    

-stepson-

-two mothers- your biological mother and your stepmother

-half brother- you have a different mother or father

-adopted son – take a boy into your family, take your name

You adopt a dog or cat.

 

-         foster son- raise a boy, not in your family- government, legal guardianship, wards of the state, temporary or permanent

-orphanage – an institution for children who have no parents, government-run

-godson- a child that have pledged to raise if the parents cannot

Sentence styles- SIMPLE, COMPOUND, COMPLEX-adverb clauses

 

Let’s learn some more of these words for adverb clauses.

time-                     after, before, since, until, when, while

condition -          if, unless, even if

manner-               though/although/even though

cause-                   because, since

purpose-              in order to

 

* after, before- time

The kids did their homework after dinner. SIMPLE

The kids did their homework after SV dinner. COMPLEX- ADV CL

The kids did their homework after they finished/ate/had their dinner. COMPLEX- ADV CL

Maris went for a walk before school. SIMPLE

Maris went for a walk before she went to school. COMPLEX- ADV CL

 

*since – two meanings – reason ‘because’, time

since – reason

Maria has two dogs and two cats because/since she loves animals.

Since Maria loves animals so much, she has two dogs and two cats.

 

since- time

COMPLEX- ADV CL

Dora has played soccer since she was 10. COMPLEX- ADV CL

 

** GOOD POINT Present perfect verb tense goes well with ‘since’.

Mei has been very busy since she started classes at South Hill.  TIME

She has been happy since she got a new job.

 

-until -time, waiting

Mei will wait until SV.

Mei will wait until the bus comes.

Mei will wait until the restaurant opens.

I waited for you until you arrived.

I waited at the school until my sister arrived.

I cleaned my home until my children came back from school.

I was waiting for you until you arrived/ finished your work.

 

-         while – two things happening at the same time

I cooked my dinner while my daughters did their homework.

I was taking some pictures while my brother was watching TV.

I was cleaning the kitchen while my mum cooked dinner.

 

-when

I cooked dinner when I got home.
