Next kind of sentence- Complex sentence with a noun clause

 

Sentence styles:

-SIMPLE   SV   SSV   SVV   SSVV   Imperative   Interrogative

**PRO TIP – If you have something really important to say, use a simple sentence.

 

-COMPOUND  SV, SOBA SV.   Introduced semicolons SV; SV.   SV; TRANS, SV.

 

-COMPLEX

- adverb clauses   because   when   if   unless   although   until   after

- noun clauses    TODAY

- adjective clauses   NEXT WEEK

 

 

Noun clauses – use these everyday

-used with verbs that have to do with thinking or your brain/mind:

‘think’, ‘know’, ‘understand’, ‘believe’, ‘realize’, ‘feel’, ‘remember’, ‘forget’

 

-also verbs about talking/speech: ‘say’, ‘whisper’, ‘tell’, ‘yell’, ‘shout’

 

Other words that we use are these pronouns: that why how

 

Two pools of words:

A-VERBS: ‘think’ ‘know’ ‘understand’ ‘believe’ ‘realize’ ‘feel’ ‘say’ ‘yell’

B-PRONOUNS: ‘that’ ‘why’ ‘how’

 

To write a noun clause take an “A” and put it with a “B” word.

A+B=noun clause

 

*believe + that

Mei believes that it will rain later today.

Junko believes that her daughter will be a great singer.

Junko believes that SV.

 

*think + that

Sarah thinks that it will rain tonight.

We all think that English is very important for newcomers to Canada.

I think that I can’t come tomorrow.  I don’t think that I can come tomorrow.

Jun thinks that he will get the book.

Mei thinks that she can sing.

Joe thinks that he is funny.

Mike thinks that he did well on the test.

Rosa Parks believed that equality should be accessible to all.

How can you say that? SIMPLE

Sara said that she can’t take the bus.

realize- understand something suddenly

tricky(adj)- not simple, easy to get confused, difficult to figure out

 

excuse(n) ‘s’ I made an excuse.

excuse(v) ‘z’ She said, “Excuse me.”

Two ways to do a noun clause:

She knows why Sarah is happy today.

She knows how to change a tire on a car.   how + infinitive

I don’t know how to speak German.

 

 I said told my sister how to drive to Capilano University. (Cap U)

I told my son to go to bed early last night.

tell – direct a person, advise them to take an action

 

 

DIFFERENT TOPIC:

will + V

She will eat her lunch in the park.

 

will be + adj or V

We will be sad when the class is over. adj

She will be driving to Seattle next week. future progressive

 

I will be back.

I will be too tired to go to the party tonight.

 

The kids will be polite at the party.

IDIOM The kids are good as gold. very polite children
