You can choose what type of writing is most approriate for your purpose.

type of writing – mode of writing

ACTIVE and PASSIVE VOICE

convince(v)  passive and active voice

active voice- S does the V

Joe convinced his wife to buy a new car.

Mei ate the sandwich.

passive voice- S does nothing, does not does the verb

Joe’s wife was convinced by Joe to buy a new car by Joe.

The sandwich was eaten by Mei.

passive voice verb – more complciated than active voice, longer

extra auxiliary verb

Mei ate the sandwich. active voice

The sandwich was eaten by Mei. passive voice

passive is longer, harder to do, and sounds weak

the subject is not doing anything

PRO TIP: Avoid active voice.

Use it when you want to sound passive or weak, don’t know who did the action.

My car was dented last night.

Jasbir’s apartment was broken into.

Exercises next week- remind me if I forget, please.
