Reigstration for April term will begin after Spring Break.

I have to give you you midterm recommendation on Friday.

The midterm recommendaiotons will be based on your marks so far.

School rule: The cutoff percentage for early reigistration is 65%.

We want strong students moving on.

 

The final pass mark is 50%. The midterm cutoff for early recommendation is 65%.

I can’t go back and replay history.

All you have to do is communicate, and I will be flexible.

The meetings will be very short (3-4 minutes). We will chat about how things are going and what you want to do next. I will have a recommnedation based on your marks and with your wishes in mind.

“Roses Sing on New Snow”

 

Reading a story twice

First time- armchair reading- relax, enjoy the story, give the general idea

1.setting- time, place, culture, milieu

2.characters- major, minor

3.plotline

 

Second reading- deeper, deeper meaning

1.symbols- meanings

2.repeated words

3.character – dynamic- Who is changing?

4.look for quotable words and phrases

 

You develop an eye for what’s important when you make notes.

 

 

The questions in a higher-level class will be deeper questions.

 

“Roses Sing on New Snow” Discussion Questions

 

KEEPING NOTES IS SUCH A VALUABLE SKILL/HABIT

 

1.    What is the setting of the story?

-Chinatown, probably Vancouver

-immigration of men from China “their families and wives waited in China”

-seems to link to building the Canadian railway

-very late 19th Century, very early 20th Century

-still an emperor in the story, before 1912

-we have positioned ths story in time and place, also in culture/society

milieu – Canada has a a more relaxed milieu than my home country of Hong Kong.

 

 

2.    Why does Maylin cook in her father’s restaurant?

-loved cooking

-helps family

-father asks, demands, expects, forces

-“seven days a week, every week of the year” no rest, no break

-has to because brothers cannot cook “lazy”

- culture – girls are valued less than boys, work at home

-likes to cook good food for these customers “lonely and cold and bone-tired” “make them smile” “renew their spirits”

IDIOM “bone-tired” “dog-tired”

-show characteristics of Maylin, personality

-through her actions- insight into her inner self

*compassionate, sympathetic, empathetic, kind, caring, pays attention to other people, cares about others, takes pleasure in caring for others, concientious, aware of others’ feelings,

Psychological reading of the story

FAMILY- “disfunctional” -lack of balance, issues, unhealthy, abuse of power based on gender, father enabling the sons

 

 

3.    Is Maylin a weak or strong person?

strong

- bided her time, waited for the right time to speak up

-patient – while cooking her best dishes

- when she got the opporutniy to speak, she was ready to assert herself

4.    What are some possible reasons Maylin named her dish “Roses Sing on New Snow”?

*Roses- good smell, aromas- flowers food

-her new life in a new country, express herself- blooming

-Maylin is strong like some roses that can grow in winter

-expression of love, makes food with love

- rose has thorns, Maylin has thorns- assertive

 

Sing- happy, joyful, showing your talent, expressing yourself- through her cooking

 

New Snow-

new world, new food, fresh, cold- Canada,

 

We get the creative juices flowing. We get the ideas going- brainstorming, thinking together.

 

5.    What does Maylin mean when she says her dish is a product of the new world?

- made only for this place, new place-new food

-new culture-new food

-idea came from here, this milieu

 

 

6.    What are some reasons the governor couldn’t cook “Roses Sing on New Snow” the same as Maylin did?

- cooking talent, skill level

-different cultures

-chef is the most important ingredient

-cook with your heart, passion, love
