EF6 8:30 Feb26

 Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Today’s agenda

1. Continue with complex sentences- adverb clauses

2. Choose the highest frequency words for adverb clauses

3. Practice

Quiz#3 Monday – adverb clauses

Simple sentence – one clause

The school is closed today due to snow. SIMPLE

due to – not an adverb clause

The school is closed today because of snow. SIMPLE

The school is closed today because there is a lot of snow. COMPLEX

I want you to be able to do this both ways. You will have that choice when you are writing. That will give you power and confidence when you are writing.

Adverb Clauses

These are most of the ones you will ever need:

* Adverbial conjunctions (adverb clause words)

time- after, before, ever since, since, until, when, whenever, while

place- wherever

condition – if, even if, provided that, unless

manner- as, as if, though, although, even though

cause- because, since

purpose or result- in order that, in order to, so that, so ... that

TOMORROW:

manner- as, as if, as ... as

purpose or result- in order that, in order to, so that, so ... that

*as

As you can see, writing English sentences is easy.

You can buy the phone as is.

* as if – seems like, but is not

He spends money as if he were a millionaire.

She treats people as if she were the queen. – not a compliment

Who does she think she is?

* as...as

as ADJ as

She is as tall as her mother (is).

He is as good at soccer as the coach is.

as tall as, as short as, as heavy as, as sweet as

as soon as

Call me as soon as you get home.

as soon as possible ASAP

*in order that/in order to – reason why you are doing something

Shira is saving money in order that she can take a vacation to Kyoto, Japan next year.

MORE NATURAL SOUNDING: Shira is saving money in order to take a vacation to Kyoto, Japan next year. different style

Shira is saving money in order to go on a vacation.

Shira is saving money to take a vacation to Kyoto, Japan next year. different style SIMPLE? COMPLEX? Very natural sounding.

In my class, I stick close to the basic sentence styles. I also show you some different more authentic styles. You may use styles that don’t fit the grammar book perfectly. That’s ok as long as they are styles that English speakers use.

When you are writing for school and a job, my advice is to stick close to the SIMPLE, COMPOUND, and COMPLEX styles that I am teaching. The styles that I am teaching are appropriate for any level of formality.

*so that – reason why

Shira is saving money so that she can take a trip to Montreal.

Shira wants to take a trip to Montreal; therefore, she is saving her money. COMPOUND

A nice variety of ways to express the same idea.

Shira wants to take a trip to Montreal; that’s why she is saving her money. COMPOUND COMPLEX- noun clause

The reason why she is saving money is that she will take a trip to Montreal. COMPLEX – adjective clause noun clause

There are many ways to express the same ideas. We will keep learning different ways.

*so ... that

so ADJ that

Yesterday, it was so cold that we could see our breath.

The dog is so fast that nobody can catch it.

The little girl is so good at math that she skipped a grade.

I am so good at photo editing that I can edit any picture.

My friend is so good at skiing that he practically lives at Cypress all winter.

The book was so interesting that I read it in one day.

The cookies were so tasty that I ate 15 of them.

My mother was so angry that she threw a shoe at me.

My typing is so bad that I cannot pass the test.

My singing is so horrible that my dog ran away.

I'm so confused about complex sentences that I need to read them carefully.

*even though  although  though (casual) -same meaning, your choice

She is going to go for a run even though she is tired.

Mary likes to study English even though she finds it difficult sometimes.

COMPLEX – adverb clause

Mary finds English difficult sometimes; nevertheless, she likes to study it. COMPOUND

Mary finds English difficult sometimes; she likes to study it. OK!

Mary likes to study English she finds it difficult sometimes. NOT OK!

*though – good for spoken, casual

Her eyes are closed; look at that smile, though! Very natural sounding.

For me, I aim for a nice variety of sentences styles in my writing.

I avoid overly long sentences.

For clear strong statements, I tend to use simple sentences.

Compound sentences are like seesaws. They must be balanced.

Complex sentence is like a ? MONDAY

MOST IMPORTANT- HIGHEST FREQUENCY

* Adverbial conjunctions (adverb clause words)

place- wherever

condition – if, even if, provided that, unless

cause- because, since

purpose or result- in order that, in order to, so that, so ... that

Focus on those 15. You can use them everyday.

EF34 11:00 Feb25

Good morning, everybody.

We will get started at 11:00.

Today’s agenda:

1.    Review Test#1 paragraph from yesterday.

2.    Complex sentences- adverb clauses

Test#1 Paragraph

Write a 100-150 word paragraph: “What is your favourite holiday?”

STRUCTURE OF A PARAGRAPH

Topic sentence

Supporting sentences

Concluding sentence

My comments and reminders:

- 14-16 point font A few students wrote their paragraphs in very small font, and I couldn’t read them. Can you read small font easily? I can’t either. If you send me writing with tiny font, I just won’t read it.

- one block of text, don’t divide into sections

Notes on sentence writing

1.    Don’t begin sentences with SOBA. It is too casual for school writing. It is ok for informal, friendly writing, but not for school or business.

For example

My whole family gets together at Xmas. And we have a big feast. RW

THREE SOLUTIONS

My whole family gets together at Xmas. We have a big feast.

My whole family gets together at Xmas, and we have a big feast.

My whole family gets together at Xmas. Also, we have a big feast.

And we have fun. XXX

‘and’ change to ‘also’

So we got to church. XXX

‘so’ change to ‘therefore’

But I don’t like mashed potatoes. XXX

‘but’ change to ‘however’

Or we stay home and play games. XXX

‘or’ change to ‘on the other hand’ ‘alternatively’

SOBA is for compound sentences.

SV, SOBA SV.

2.    run on sentence RO

For example:

People will have a week holiday, they don’t need go to work.

CS comma splice – a comma is not strong enough to put between sentences

SOLUTIONS

People will have a week holiday, so they don’t need go to work.

People will have a week holiday. They don’t need go to work.

Example:

Chinese New Year is a traditional day for us, it is the most anticipated day for us. CS comma splice- a comma is not strong enough

SOLUTIONS:

Chinese New Year is a traditional day for us, and it is the most anticipated day for us. One compound

Chinese New Year is a traditional day for us. It is the most anticipated day for us. Two simples

COPYING/ PLAGIARIZING/ CHEATING ON TESTS

When you do a test, so not copy from the internet. Do not copy from a book. Do not get your Uncle Joe to do your test. Do not use a dictionary. Do not use a spellcheck.

Use your own English. It is the way to learn.

When you do your driving test, were you allowed to check the book for answers?

If you get caught, you will get a 0 on your test.

We are here to learn. Students who get 6/6 or 1/6 on the tests– all students are welcome in this class.

We are here to improve our English. Cheating is not a way to improve.

We will try another paragraph next week.

My mother-in-law and I smile at each other even though we hate each other. – just a joke

I like living in Vancouver although rent is expensive.

Shirin is saving money so that she can take a vacation to Iran next year.

You are learning more English so that you can get a BC high school diploma.

The old women exercises everyday so that she can stay healthy as she ages.

The woman is so smart that she works for NASA.

We will continue with this tomorrow.

EF6 8:30 Feb25

Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Today’s agenda

1.    Continue with complex sentences- adverb clauses

Quiz#3 tomorrow – adverb clauses

Adverb Clauses

* Adverbial conjunctions (adverb clause words)

time- after, before, ever since, since, until, when, whenever, while

place- wherever

condition – if, even if, provided that, unless

manner- as, as if, though, although, even though

cause- because, since

purpose or result- in order that, in order to, so that, so ... that

Source of confusion- difference between compound and complex sentences, specifically transitional terms and adverbial conjunctions (adverb clause words)

* Compound sentence – transitional term

It snowed last night; therefore, the roads were slick this morning.

* Complex sentence – adverbial conjunction (adverb clause words)

The roads were slick this morning because it snowed last night.

These are two different kinds of sentences. They may look similar, but they are not.

Compound sentences – “Transitional Terms” words, terms

You have to be learning those on your own. If you do not learn them, your writing will remain at the level it is now.

To be clear: You can learn these, but you have to learn these. You have had them for over a week. Have you been studying them?

If yes, good for you. You are doing the work that you have to do in order to improve your writing.

If no, then that is your decision. You can decide to start doing the work at any time- today or next week or five years from now. Up to you.

Very simple advice to you and to me:

If you want to learn piano, play piano a little bit every day. In a year, you’ll be good.

If you want to learn piano to write sentence styles in English, play

piano practice the sentence styles a little bit every day. In a year, you’ll be good.

When your English is getting better, you will feel great! However, you have to do the work.

Today’s work:

* Adverbial conjunctions (adverb clause words)

time- after, before, since, until, when, whenever, while

condition – if, even if, provided that, unless

manner- as, as if, though, although, even though, as ... as

cause- because, since

purpose or result- in order that, in order to, so that, so ... that

If you learn these, you will be able to express 99.9% of your ideas.

* before- Call me before you leave. complex- adverb clause

          Call me before 8pm. simple

* since- Maria has lived in Canada since 1990. simple

Maria has lived in Canada since she moved from Indonesia in 1990. complex- adverb clause

Can you see the difference?

* until – We will wait until you get home.

* when/while   when- time   while-two things happening at the same

time

Sarah was washing the dishes when the phone rang. one moment in

time

Sarah was washing the dishes while Joe was watching TV.

My daughter was reading while I was playing guitar.

simple present

I get up early while you get up late.

TRUE FACT: It is difficult to differentiate between these right now. That will come with practice.

*if

Sarah will go to the party if she is free.

We will go to the park if it is sunny.

*even if

Sarah will not go to the party even if she is free.

We will go to the park even if it is not sunny.

These are very powerful terms that you can use to express your thoughts. Often, I tell students that should become familiar with authentic, real English. This is real English that we use all day, every day.

*provided that – ‘if’ for important things

Let’s grab some coffee if you’re free. – not important

You can change your career provided that you have made a good plan.

- important

You can go to UBC provided that you have the prereqs. (prerequisite courses)

grab some coffee- (casual) have some coffee

*unless – changes the situation, opposite of ‘if’ ‘provided that’

Let’s grab some coffee if you’re free.

Let’s grab some coffee unless you’re busy.

Let’s not grab coffee if you are busy.

Let’s take a raincheck on coffee if you are busy. (idiom)

take a raincheck – we will do it later, postpone

Do you want to go for a walk today?

I have a doctor’s appointment. Can I take a raincheck?

since / ever since

since – time

ever since – long time

Maria has lived in Canada since 2018. SIMPLE SENTENCE

Maria has lived in Canada ever since 1978. long time SIMPLE SENTENCE

Maria has lived in Canada since she moved from Japan in 2018. COMPLEX SENTENCE adverb clause

Maria has lived in Canada ever since she moved from Japan in 1978. long time

If something feels like a long time, use ‘ever since’.

We have been in class since 8:30. doesn’t feel like a long time

We have been waiting for the bus ever since 8:30. feels like a long time

These terms and words can change the way you express yourself in English. They can really help you express your thoughts and ideas clearly. They are very powerful tools, and you should learn to use them.

NOTE: ‘simple’ – several uses

Used for simple sentences. Used for simple verb tenses

-confusing

We will practice tomorrow. Try some of your own for homework. We can share them.

cause- because, since

because – easiest one

The little girl is tired because she was running around the park all day.

The little girl is tired since she was running around the park all day.

since – two meaning – time, cause

due to + noun

The little girl is tired due to her running around the park all day. awk

The school is closed today due to snow. due to + noun

The school is closed today because of snow. simple

The school is closed today due to snow. simple

We can see the many many variations that we can write.

For this class, I will stick mostly to the basic SIMPLE, COMPOUND, and COMPLEX.

TOMORROW:

manner- as, as if, though, although, even though, as ... as

purpose or result- in order that, in order to, so that, so ... that

 Good morning, everyone.

Today’s agenda

1. Review Test#1 – paragraph

2. Begin complex sentences- adverb clauses

Topic sentence – directly connected to the question

TIPS to connect your TS to the question:

1. mirror vocab from the question

What is your favourite holiday?

My favourite holiday is Eid Fitr.

2. Use synonyms

The celebration that I enjoy most is Easter.

Supporting sentences- explain or describe your three points- 3 is a good number to aim for

Concluding sentence

(150-200 words)

Grabber – teach later

My notes on the writing:

1. Quality of the sentences- simple, compound, complex

2. Format of the paragraph – one block of writing, not 5 or 6 sections

I have concerns about students (you) cheating on tests.

- on line, not in class, cameras on

- plagiarism – copying writing from a book or the internet and passing it

in

Last week, I was marking personal essays that were written by students. Several of the essays were copied from the internet. That is cheating. That is plagiarism. The students who cheated got 0%. Also, I wrote a letter for their permanent file. Most importantly, I don’t trust them anymore.

- using dictionaries during tests –  That’s cheating. Use your own

vocabulary. For example, when you do your driving test, are you allowed to check the driving book quickly to refresh your memory?

Maybe I will not be able to tell if you used a dictionary or a spell check.

You will know that you did it.

It’s not a happy topic, but it is a problem that comes up.

Plagiarized:

My favorite holiday is New Year’s Day. New Year’s Day comes once in a year and is a special day throughout the world. All people in the universe recognize this day because it is the beginning day of the year, which is the first day of January. The weather is usually cold by that period. On the 31st of December, I usually gather my family together to give praises to God starting at 11:00 pm until 1:00 am. At 10:00 am, I usually go to church with my family. After arriving home from church, my family and friends usually have a get together party with various kinds of food that would have been prepared to eat, such as pounded yam, rice and beans, and turkey. After eating, I used to give out some gifts to my friends.

0/6

Write a letter for their permanent file.

The trust is broken.

Plagiarism and cheating

You should not be using a spell checker or grammar checker during tests. Turn them off.

Rephrasing is fine. Copying is not.

Citations – teach later

Paragraph format:

-indent the first word

-one block of writing

I  want to talk about one of my best and favorite holidays in Persian culture. It is called “ Shab- e-Yalda”( Yalda night). Persian  people celebrate it every year on December 20/21;  this is the last day of fall and the longest and darkest night of the year. On this night family and friends get together to talk and dance, eat and drink the whole night. Beside the variety of Persian  food, red fruits like watermelons and pomegranates always serve this night. People believe the colors of these fruits are symbols of the glow of their life; also eating nuts make them warm and strong. The special part is reading poetry of “ Hafez”, after midnight. Every person, one by one, makes a wish and asks for a poem. They chose a poem by the chance and this poem will blessed their life for the next year. In  fact we celebrate this night, because after “Yalda”  all the nights get shorter and shorter, and spring is coming.

holiday- vacation or statutory day off

My favourite holiday was when I went to Montreal on a business trip.

weekend = holiday? , day off

holiday = religious day?

humanism – not religion

Concluding sentence- restate the topic sentence, wraps up the paragraph

Gold is a precious metal that is valued for two important reasons. First of all, gold is beautiful and does not corrode. Therefore, it is good for jewelry, coins, and ornaments. Gold never needs to be polished and will remain beautiful forever. For example, an antique gold coin looks as beautiful today as the day it was made. Secondly, gold is very useful to industry and science. It is used in many applications, such as photography and dentistry. Also, gold is used in astronauts' suits. Astronauts wear gold-plated heat shields for protection when they go outside spaceships in space. In conclusion, gold is treasured not only for its beauty but also for its usefulness.
