 Today’s agenda:

2. Review the Literary Terms we have done so far.

3. Adjective clauses

4. “Roses Sing on New Snow” video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbIpPDfQD3s

5. Test#4 Paragraph on “Roses Sing on New Snow”

I would rather do an easier topic today:

Paragraph on a topic related to literary terms.

You have an easier topic to write about.

We will continue with “Roses Sing on New Snow” after Xmas Break.

Have a great Xmas Break. See you on January 4th.

We have a two-week break.

** Midterm Reports from yesterday

The passmark for high school courses in BC is 50%. If you get at least 50% as your final mark, you can go to the next level.

Students who get 50% - 64% as a final mark often struggle in higher level classes. They aren’t really ready yet.

Would like to have a doctor who passed with 50%?

That is why I give a midterm recommendation based on a 65% minimum. If you have at least 65% at midterm, that means you are probably pretty ready for the next level.

If you’re midterm is below 65%, you have four weeks left to bring that mark up.

We will continue to have quizzes and tests every week until the end of the course.

Some students would prefer to stick in the same level for another term.

The terms are only nine weeks. If you work hard in an organized way, you can improve a lot in a short time.

You will see progress with time and daily work.

Enjoy what you’re doing. Find something in your work that you enjoy.

Have compassion for yourself.

It is always difficult to do things that are good for you, like eating healthy, going to bed early, and working out everyday.

Next term I will be teaching these classes:

P1 8:30-10:15am English Foundations 5

P2 11:00-1:15 English Foundations 3/4 +

Reading and Writing 3/4

Maybe we can together in a class in April.

Some people like to repeat a class once or twice to really get the information into their minds. Usually that’s ok, but the school won’t let you take and retake the class over and over.

There is not hard and fast rule. However, the government is paying, not you. The government decides if they will keep paying for a student to take and retake a class.

Hi EF56 colearners,

Tomorrow, I will be giving out midterm reports based on the marked work we have completed so far this term. Email me tomorrow morning during class time, and I will email you back your midterm average and my recommendation for what you should do next term, to stay at this level or to move to the next level.

We have done four quizzes worth three points each.

We have done four three tests worth six points each.

I have offered both a replacement quiz and a replacement test to replace one of the quiz or test marks.

Also, there was one bonus point for getting your first email to me on time.

In the final four weeks of the course, we will do approximately one quiz and one test per week.

There will be a lot of opportunity to raise or lower your mark.

I give early recommendations to students who have an average of 65% and higher at midterm.

Best,

Al

The early midterm recommendation system is the school system. I would rather wait until the end of the course and just give a final mark.

All quiz and test marks are counted toward your final mark.

Scenario #1

Midterm average: 52%

For the next four weeks, all of your quizzes and tests are fantastic with high marks.

Final average: 75%

Scenario #2

Midterm average: 76%

For the next four weeks, all of your quizzes and tests are lousy with low marks.

Final average: 45%

Midterm report is a snapshot of how you are doing now.

It’s like a running race. It doesn’t matter who is ahead halfway through; what matters who finishes where.

MY NOTE: Root of racism. Assuming someone is simple and flat because of one or two characteristics. We all have to be careful and think about that when we look at people in the world. Never judge a book by its cover.

Change is good! If we don’t change, we can’t handle the challenges in our life in a healthy way.

Transition of identity. Migration of identity.

You don’t have to be the person you have been all your life. You can change if you want to.

Email me by 1:30 today if you want to replace one of your quiz marks. No lates. Tell me which quiz you want to replace: Quiz 1(simple sentences), 2(compound sentences), or 3(complex sentences-adverb clauses).

The replacement quiz will be Wednesday after class.

The quiz will be 2 simple, 2 compound, 2 adverb clause sentences.

1. Noun clauses

2. Literary Terms - tomorrow

3. Tomorrow (Tuesday) – Quiz on noun clauses

Thursday class- no class meeting. Email correspondence.

Registration for February quarter will begin January 4th. I will give midterm recommendations on Thursday.

We will not have a regular class on Thursday.

Email me during regular class time (11:00-1:15pm) on Thursday if you want a midterm mark and recommendation. I will email you back your midterm mark and my recommendation whether you should register for the next level or stay at the level you are at.

My recommendation means that I think that you are ready to move up.

My cutoff for recommendations is 65%. If you are scoring less than that, you should not move up although you are marginally passing. Students who move up when they are not ready do not do well in higher level classes. I will not recommend students who are not ready.

If you pass the class with a low mark (e.g. 52%), you can register for the next level. However, I will not give you a recommendation for that.

You can roughly calculate what your midterm average will be using the method I showed you last week. In case of discrepancy, my calculation will stand.

Add them together and divide by the denominator.

Quiz marks x/3- NOTES-Quiz marks are x/6, but are worth x/3.

Email me by 11am today if you want to replace one of your quiz marks. No lates. Tell me which quiz you want to replace: Quiz 1(simple sentences), 2(compound sentences), or 3(complex sentences-adverb clauses).

The replacement quiz will be Wednesday after class.

The quiz will be 2 simple, 2 compound, 2 adverb clause sentences.

1. Noun clauses

2. Literary Terms - tomorrow

3. Tomorrow (Tuesday) – Quiz on noun clauses

Thursday class- no class meeting. Email correspondence.

Registration for February quarter will begin Dec 16th January 4th. I will give midterm recommendations on Thursday. We will not have a regular class on Thursday. Email me during regular class time (8:30-10:45am) on Thursday if you want a midterm and recommendation.

If you pass the class with 1 low mark (e.g. 52%), you can register for the next level. However, I will not give you a recommendation for that.

You can roughly calculate what your midterm will be using the method I showed you last week. In case of discrepancy, my calculation will stand.

Add them together and divide by the denominator.
