Evening class - Structure of a five-paragraph essay


The bare bones of the five-paragraph, academic essay


A)     Introduction-    begins the essay by outlining the topic to be covered
explaining to your reader what to expect
                     1)  Grabber- an optional attention-getting device
2)     Thesis statement-        states specific focus of the essay and opinion to
be argued
3)  Preview of three points- stated, but not explained
          1)
          2)
          3)

B)     Body-               deals with each of the previewed points in turn using three unified
paragraphs (as covered in class)
1)    topic sentence   -supporting sentences
-explanation
-examples
2)    topic sentence   -supporting sentences
-explanation
-examples
3)    topic sentence   -supporting sentences
-explanation
-examples

C)       Conclusion-  restates the introduction (restates the thesis statement, opinion                                                      to be argued and three points)                                                                                                                                                 -          ends with an optional clincher

Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them.
