EF5/6 April 27 2020 Class notes and homework

Everyday, Monday to Friday, we will meet on Zoom at 1:30. I will post the Zoom invite on the blog at 1:15.

Everyday I will talk, teach, lecture for about one hour (1:30-2:30). Then I will give you some homework to do.

Quizzes and tests will be done by email. You will send me your quizzes and tests via email.
Please write all quizzes and tests using Word. If you don’t have Word, you can use another program.
I will mark it electronically and sent it back to you.
Please put in the subject heading “EF5” or “EF6” and your name.
Today, we will try it. I will ask you to do some short writing and sent it to me.

My name is Al Haley. I have been teaching at South Hill Education Centre since 1993. I teach English course from English Foundations 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and English 10, 11, and 12.

All of our classes will be online.
We will learn a lot in this class.
We will make the best of this strange situation.


Every afternoon Monday to Friday at 1:30pm, we will meet on Zoom. I will post a link to our Zoom meeting at 1:15pm.

Standard Course Description:
This course will help you improve your reading, writing, and oral skills in preparation for EF6 and English 10.
You will read literature and nonfiction.  Then, you will build paragraphs to write about them.  Also, you will learn to build academic essays.  Also, you will develop speaking (?) and listening skills required in academic high school courses.

What ideas do you have for speaking in an online class?

Learning Outcomes:
It is expected that students will be able to
      make oral presentations and work effectively in groups
      listen to and understand ideas and information (summarize main ideas and details, distinguish between fact and opinion, make inferences)
      read a variety of literary prose forms and narrative and lyric poems
      read and comprehend informational and persuasive texts
      use reading strategies
      write simple compound and complex sentences
      write a variety of informational writing with an introduction, details, and a conclusion (i.e. introduction to writing essays)
      write a variety of personal, narrative, and creative writings
      write using effective paragraphing
      use appropriate verb tenses and forms
      use a writing process

The instructor may adjust the number and value of assessments according to the needs of the class. 


Expectations and Classroom Policies:
Write all tests, homework and assignments using Word or another program.
You may not use dictionaries during work for marks. I am here to help you. I would like to see your English so that I can help you make it better.


Attendance and Participation:
Consistent attendance and positive participation in class are important factors in student success.  At South Hill Education Centre, we require that all students demonstrate their commitment to their studies by attending regularly and by participating in class activities
I hope that you will be able to attend our 1:30-2:30 classes. If you are busy and you miss the class, you can check the notes on the blog.

Late/Missed Assignments:
You can arrange with me to make up the occasional missed test or quiz in the day or so. Let me know and we will figure out a time to do the makeup.




Academic Honesty:
Academic honesty is expected of all students. Cheating (including plagiarism) is a serious offence with immediate consequences. For more information, please refer to the “Academic Honesty Policy” posted in each classroom or ask for a copy in the office.

Write a personal introduction for yourself.

2) Family
3) Occupation
4) Hobbies
5) Travel
6) Special skills
7) Future plans
Write a sentence each for those topics.
Use Word to write those.
