Eng 11 WAE Ch 2 "Coherence"

The man was speaking incoherently. The things he was saying didn't make sense.

cohesive (a) same meaning?

A paragraph to be coherent. We want it to hang together; we want it to flow.

make the writing smooth, go along smoothly, locally

Organization of the ideas 
generating ideas
- brainstorm (group activity) 4-5 ideas
- free writing
- list

What order are you going to put them in?
1. Time - narrative (tell a story), expository (teach or explain how to accomplish a task or how something works, instruction) 
2. Space - descriptive (describe- characteristics of a thing, placed or person) 
- appeal to the five senses: touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing 
- a sixth sense - feeling, intuition, gut-feeling - ESP, extra-sensory perception

Your grandmother's face - hair, eyes, cheeks, mouth

3. Importance - least important to most important, end with the most important point
Journalism - newspaper writing, newscast - lead with the most important point, headline news
News. Weather, Sports, Human Interest

Organizing your ideas: Time, space, importance.
Choose one. Don't just let it happen.

The type of writing that you are doing will suggest how the ideas ought to be organized.

* Repetition of Key Nouns - repeating words within reason, repetition can help with coherence

* Consistent pronouns - number, singular/plural, gender - he/she, the language is changing- "they" for everyone, singular or plural
I want to feel included and that they belong. I'm happy to respect a person's choice of pronoun.

Comma usage is very personal. Some people love commas; other people rarely use them. You can decide as you develop as a writer.

At the beginning or end is pretty safe. In the middle takes an ear for English.
