Eng 11 Review of sentence types

Three (3) sentence types in English
Every sentence that you write has to be one of these types. If your sentence is not one of these types, than it likely isn't real English.

SIMPLE
S+V = subject and verb
It is sunny today.
SSV
Vancouver and Yokohama are sister cities.

SVV
Sarah went to Mount Seymour yesterday and snowshoed with her friends.

Sarah went downtown, had lunch. XXX

Imperative - give a command, tell somebody to do something
"Sit!" no subject "You sit!"
implied subject- Come in. Sit down. Get out. Let's go. Be careful. Calm down, please.

COMPOUND
7 coordinating conjunctions , FANBOYS
for and nor but or yet so - Bad advice

for
Let's go to the park, for it is a beautiful day today. UNUSUAL
Let's go to the park because it is a beautiful day today. COMPLEX - adverb cl

nor
Sheila does not speak French, nor does she speak German. UNUSUAL
Sheila doesn't speak French or German.

yet
It is sunny, yet it is cold. UNUSUAL
It is sunny, but it is cold.
I haven't finished yet. NOT COMPOUND
for nor yet

COMPLEX
adverb clauses - subordinating conjunctions because, if, when, though, even though, as, since, provided that
"We will go to Tofino in the spring if/ provided that we can get vacation days." if, provided that - important things
"Let's go get some coffee provided that if you have time."
Two styles for adverb clauses
"Let's go get some coffee if you have time."
"If you have time, let's go get some coffee."

"I will rent your house provided that you lower the rate."
"Provided that you lower the rate, I will rent your house."

noun clauses
feel think believe know understand forget remember say

I think that you are very generous with your time.
The story shows that the step-mother is in an precarious ill-defined position in the family.

adjective clause

- that- everything
- which - things, special things, unique things

describe nouns
The young kids who are waiting at the bus stop are from Queen Mary Elementary School.
My mother that who lives in China is 80 years old.
The old man that/who is walking down the sidewalk looks lost.

that - things that are not alive, animals
The novel that we are reading is Canadiana.
I was playing with the dog that came up to us in the park.

which
The pencil which/that my daughter bought me is a drawing pencil.
Your wedding ring which your spouse gave you is made of gold.
VGH which is located on West 12th Avenue is a big hospital.
I come from Egypt, which is next to the Red Sea.

Paris, which is the capital city of France, is a global centre for fashion. , bbbbb, non-restrictive clause, non-essential clause
My school which is on 29th Avenue is a popular high school.
South Hill Education Centre, which is in Vancouver, is popular with adults who are coming back to school for various reasons. unique
