Eng 7/10/11 Simple sentences

Sentence types- SIMPLE, COMPOUND, COMPLEX

SIMPLE - Subject + predicate, one clause

A clause is a group of words that that has a subject and a verb.

S+V
She likes ice cream.

SS + V
You and I go to the park.

S + VV
He walks down the sidewalk and sings to himself.

1. simple subject and predicate
The dog is asleep. LOW LEVEL
The ferry leaves Horseshoe Bay at 2:50 every day.


2. compound predicate
We walked around Metrotown and looked for good deals.
The little kid is playing with her Lego and singing to herself.

3. compound subject and predicate
My sister and I used to walk to the school everyday.

used to XXX - activity in the past, don't do it anymore
I used to do yoga before I came to Vancouver.

am used to - feel comfortable
She is used to Vancouver now, but she didn't like it at first.

4. simple subject interrogative sentence
What do you want to do next Monday night?
Can I borrow your truck to pick up a sofa?

loveseat - couch for two people

5. on the road, in the tree, under the sink, beside the table, before the party, after the sale, instead of going, in case of emergency, before the lunch
We went antiquing all around Chilliwack last Saturday.
antique - old thing, 50+ years old

look for, look to, pick up - phrasal verbs

6. Here are your glasses and your keys.

8. Do you drive to work or take the bus? SIMPLE
Do you drive to work, or do you take the bus? COMPOUND
Do you like to travel or stay (at) home?
Do you like traveling or staying (at) home?

Are the kids doing their homework or playing Fortnite?

10. We were dancing and singing the night away at the Lady Gaga concert.
