EF45 Class 22

 

In the next few weeks, I will be away from class some days.

I have meetings with the school board for the teachers. I am a rep for the teachers.

 

Next Wed and Thurs- one-on-one meetings

Complex sentences- adverb clauses

 

What are some adverb clauses words we should review? Which ones are you not sure about yet?

 

*since -two meanings

1. reason why- because

because- higher-frequency word, more commonly used

since-

Since I was a teenager, I have wanted to immigrate to Canada.

VERB TENSE - have wanted present perfect

present perfect – from the past until now

She has lived in Canada for two years.

present perfect- learn next week

 

since-time

She has lived in Canada since 2021. SIMPLE SENT SV

She has lived in Canada since she was 21. COMPLEX SENT

PRO TIP: Use ChatGPT as a study aid. It can be a very useful learning tool. It is like a teacher on command.

Descriptive writing – describe something

descriptive paragraph – describing something or someone

 

- person, painting, photograph, scenery/landscape, animal, tree, car, food, etc.

 

-         azure blue water, turqoise blue, deep blue, wispy clouds, thin clouds, grey rocks, palm or coconut trees

-         white waves, whitecaps

 

-appeal to the five senses- means of connection between our brains and the world

five senses –

1.sense of sight – seeing with our eyes

2.sense of touch – nerves in our skin – pressure and heat

3.sense of taste – tongue (organ of taste) taste buds on your tongue– sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness, NEW IDEA umami (Japanese- meaty taste), spicy?

4.sense of smell- olfactory(adj) smell- nose- very evocative (easy to remember) of memory, go back in time- perfume, food

5.sense of hearing – ears, eardrums, three tiny bones (hammer, anvil, stirrup)

OUR DESCRIPTIVE WRITING

Focus on seeing- our sense of sight-

We will be using adjectives – descriptive words – to describe things

 

Descriptive words about how things look:

-opinion- beautiful, ugly, nice, pretty, handsome, gorgeous, adorable, cute, attractive, etc.

 

-colour- blue, dark blue, navy blue, sky blue, robin’s egg blue,

light green, forest green, seafoam green, lime green, neon green, hunters’ orange, fire engine red, burgundy, maroon, dark brown, chocolate brown, light brown, black

hazel-

 

-shape- triangular, round, square, pear-shaped, fat, skinny, full-figured, slim, rectangular,  five-sided, six-sided, eight-sided (stop sign), pentagonal

 

-size – small, big, giant, huge, tiny, miniscule, immense, gigantic

 

-material- wood, wooden, metal, metallic, leather, plastic, cotton, nylon, silk, wool, down (small feathers of a goose), Gore-Tex, fleece, velvet, lace, denim (jeans), burlap

 

You need vocabulary to write good descriptions. You can use your dictionary or thesaurus to find vocabulary.

 

Dictionary- gives definitions of words

 

Thesaurus- useful tool for building and discoverng new vocabulary

- gives synonyms for words

-antonym – word with opposite meaning

You can use a thesaurus when you writing descriptive paragraphs in this class.

I use a thesaurus all the time when I am writing.

You can use a thesaurus to build vocabulary.

 

CLASS/HOMEWORK ACTIVITY:

Write a short description of your grandmother/grandfather/ uncle/aunt/mother/sister face. Choose one person in your family.
