Registration for November term, Quarter 2 (Nov-Jan) begins October 14th.

In order to register, you need a recommendation from your teacher.

I will give you a recommendation next Wednesday or Thursday based on quizzes, tests, RW, spoken. Latenesses and absences are problematic.

 

 

The rec will either be stay at this level or go up to the next level.

Go to the next level- demonstrate that are Proficient in the key PLOs.

There are many ways to give the same information. You should be able to write all of these styles by the end of EF23 

 

- SIMPLE SENTENCE SV   SSV   SVV

Maris is wearing a sweater. It is chilly today.

 

- COMPOUND SENTENCE SV, SOBA SV.  so   or   but   and

EF45 ; semicolon   ; TRANS,    ; however,   therefore   also, etc.

It is chilly today; therefore, Maris is wearing a sweater.

 

EF23   It is chilly today, so Maris is wearing a sweater.

 

 

-HIGHER LEVEL COMPOUND SENTENCE- EF45

Last kind of sentence for EF23

- COMPLEX SENTENCE - ADVERB CLAUSE

Maris is wearing a sweater because it is chilly today.

 

- COMPLEX SENTENCE - ADVERB CLAUSE

Because it is chilly today, Maris is wearing a sweater.

 

* Comma usage with adverb clauses

-She is tired today because she couldn’t sleep last night. no comma

-Because she couldn’t sleep last night, she is tired today. comma

 

 

 

 

These are the most important words to learn for adverb clauses:

-because- give a reason why

-if- maybe yes, maybe no, not decided yet

-when- the time something happens

-after- an event’s placement in time

-before- an event’s placement in time

Because she got a new job, she is very happy. COMPLEX

This will always work.

 

Examples:

The room is hot because the heat/furnace is on.

Because the heat is on, the room is hot.

 

She is tired because she worked last night.

Because she worked last night, she is tired.

 

 

-if- maybe yes, maybe no, not decided yet

          Mei will come to the barbecue if she is free.

If she is free, Mei will come to the barbecue.

OR -put name first, pronoun second

If Mei is free, she will come to the barbecue.

 

Use simple future once:

Mei will come to the barbecue if she will be free. XXX

Mei will come to the barbecue if she is free.

We will do a quiz if we are ready.  if we will be ready XXX

-before- an event’s placement in time

          You should call your sister before you leave.

          I turned off the movie before it was finished.

I turn off the light before I go to sleep/bed.

Before I say something, I think carefully.
