Present Progressive Verb Tense Handout

 

These are the verb tenses we have learned so far:

We have to know these by the end of the course.

Quizzes, tests- You have to be able to write these.

*Simple present- everyday action, usual, habitual action, truth

happening right now

She/He/It/Junko goes to school by bus.

We/I/They/You go to school by bus.

 

*Simple past – one event finished

She/He/It/Junko/We/I/They/You went to school by bus.

Next verb tense:

 

*Present progressive OR present continuous- same meaning

‘ing’ verb

 

auxiliary verb ‘to be’ + ‘ing’ verb

auxiliary verb ‘to be’ = is   are   am

 

auxiliary - five syllables, helping, extra

AUX – back of your TV, in your car

 

Examples:

Junko is walking down the sidewalk.

Junko and Sarah are walking down the sidewalk.

I am walking down the sidewalk.

 

EXAMPLES:

I am studying English right now.

We are listening to the teacher.

Jun is talking to his sister.

I am sitting on a chair.

SSV Mei and Junko are talking to their sister.

SVV   Jun is talking to his sister and is laughing.

          Joe is driving his car and listening to the radio.

Joe is driving his car and is listening to the radio. Sounds strange

COMPOUND SV, SOBA SV.

We are getting in the car, and I am going to the beach.

We are getting in the car, and we are going to the beach.

There are many ways to write to express the same information.

I am swimming. PRESENT PROGRESSIVE- right now

 

Confusion:

I am going to go swimming. ‘swimming’ is a gerund, noun EF45

I am swimming. ‘swimming’ is part of a present progressive verb tense

You really have to know your verbs.

 

HIGHER-LEVEL OPTIONAL

I am learning to swim.

I am learning swimming.

 

I am taking swimming lessons.

 

 

AUX + ‘ing’ verb
