Present progressive sentences from homework

Your examples:

1.    They are fixing the road outside my house.

2.    Huge changes are happening in the world in social networking.

VOCAB mortgage- loan for a house, condo, property, real estate

long term loan- 20,25,30 years

car- loan

shorter term – 2,3,4,5,6 years

Payday loan- high interest loan, cheque-cashing business

principal – the amount that you owe without interest

$100 + 5% interest annually-

compound interest- the amount owed builds on the interest year after year

EASIEST WAY TO SAY THIS- simple past

Mei watched a movie last night.

 

** simple past and past progressive- little bit different usage

 

SIMPLE PAST- one event, finished

Mei watched a movie last night.

 

PAST PROGRESSIVE- event in the past, interrupted by something else

Mei was watching a movie last night when the electricity went out.

Mei was watching a movie last night, and her sister called.

 

EXAMPLES:

I was coming to school, and the bus stopped because of construction.

My son and I had lunch in his classmate’s home at noon yesterday.

My son and I were having lunch in his classmate’s home at noon yesterday, and he broke a glass.

She was driving her car, and a dog ran in front of her.

She was driving from Victoria to Nanaimo, and a deer ran (right) in front of my car.

There was an earthquake last Friday. Did you feel it?

Yes, I was studying at South Hill (when the earthquake happened).

Yes, I was talking to my neighbour in the backyard (when the earthquake happened).

No, I was taking a ferry, so I didn’t feel it.
