“Roses Sing on New Snow” Discussion Questions

 

Get into some groups (4-5 people). This is an opportunity to talk and share knowledge about the story in preparation for writing later.

 

1.    What is the setting of the story?

setting- time, place, culture

TIME- 1900?- subtle clue, evidence -Emperor

good inference- infer(v) – make a good guess based on evidence, reading carefully, reading deeply

-lots of workers, men, Chinese “lonely and cold and bone-tired”

-railroad labourers, Gold Rush

 

PLACE- Chinatown, family restaurant, sizable Chinatowns in 1900s- San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, etc.

 

CULTURE- family, society

How is Mayline treated in the family?

father pays more attention to the brothers- evidence?

Why?

old sexist culture, gender discrimination

 

2.    What are some reasons that Maylin cooked in her father’s restaurant?

-“loved food”

-cooking for the immigrants foreign workers “lonely men” homesick

“make them smile” “renew their spirits”

-IDIOM breadwinner – a person who earns in a family

She is the main breadwinner in the family.

She was supporting her family

-necessity- the brothers and father were useless in the kitchen, not able to cook

-loyalty to the family, duty, feeling of responsibility, dutiful daughter, TRADITIONAL, OLD TIMES- girl must obey the father/husband

 

Women were not afforded educational opportunities. They had less power. This is still the case in some countries.

 

3.    What are some possible reasons Maylin named her dish “Roses Sing on New Snow”? What could those words mean?

tale- not a true story, fairy tale- children’s story, e.g. Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood

What could some meanings be behind these words?

*Roses- woman, pretty, beautiful, women are often compared to flowers, delicate, strong rose to grow on snow- Maylin, men workers

*Sing-roses sing/women work, make a happy sound, express emotion, sizzling like hot food, action-movement- Maylin thriving despite her hardship- family sitiation, father’s treatment of her, she is joyful

Life is art. optimistic/creative side of life- creating meaning in life, enjoying the process of creating, self-expression

 

 

*New- invented/created a new dish, reinvented herself, new country, new culture, different culture, different mindset

 

*Snow- colour of fish is white, visually evocative,

“Snow on the Volcano”

-Canada? cold climate, unforgiving place-culture, environment

 

 

 

4.    What does Maylin mean when she says her dish is a product of the new world?

-         new culture, new place

-         different ingredients, salt, sugar, soy sauce- not the same

-         chef’s feelings, emotions

 

5.    What are some reasons the governor couldn’t cook “Roses Sing on New Snow” the same as Maylin did?

-different passion about food

-differents skill levels

-Then governor just wanted to win. Maylin was cooking with love and passion.

Did he want to win or learn? Did Maylin want to win or teach him something?

-Maylin was very naturally confident. Governer was over-confident than what his skills level was.
