DIRECT SPEECH= quotation marks

I said to my wife, “I bought a new guitar yesterday.”

I said to my daughter, “Your hair is getting very long.”

She said to her son, “You will be tall when you grow up.”

 

INDIRECT SPEECH

I said to my wife that I bought a new guitar yesterday.

I said to my daughter that her hair is getting very long.

She said to her son that he will be tall when he grows up.

noun clauses- useful for indirect speech

 

The teacher said, “We will not have a quiz tomorrow.”

The teacher said (that) we will not have a quiz tomorrow.

 

My friend said, “Let’s go for a walk.”

My friend said that we should go for a walk.

 

My mother always said, “Do your work as carefully as you can.”

My mother always said to do my work as carefully as I can.

 

You tell your son to be careful when he goes out by himself.

You tell your son, “Be careful when you go out by yourself.”

I tell my daughter not to stay up too late at night. She is a night owl.

I tell my students not to be too self-concious when it comes to speaking.
