Next kind of sentence- complex sentence with a noun clause

 

Sentence styles:

 

-SIMPLE   SV   SSV   SVV   SSVV   Imperative   Interrogative

**PRO TIP – If you have something really important to say, use a simple sentence.

 

-COMPOUND    SV, SOBA SV.

SV; SV.

SV; TRANS, SV.

 

-COMPLEX

- adverb clauses   because   when   if   unless   although   until   after

 

- noun clauses TODAY, this week

 

- adjective clauses   NEXT WEEK, after Spring Break

 

 

Noun clauses – use these everyday

-used with verbs that have to do with thinking or your brain/mind:

‘think’, ‘know’, ‘understand’, ‘believe’, ‘realize’, ‘feel’, ‘remember’, ‘forget’

 

-also verbs about talking/speech: ‘say’, ‘whisper’, ‘tell’, ‘yell’, ‘shout’

 

Other words that we use are these pronouns: that why how

 

Two pools of words:

A-VERBS: ‘think’ ‘know’ ‘understand’ ‘believe’ ‘realize’ ‘feel’ ‘say’ ‘yell’

B-PRONOUNS: ‘that’ ‘why’ ‘how’

 

To write a noun clause take an “A” and put it with a “B” word.

A+B=noun clause

Junko believes that her daughter will be a great singer.

Junko believes that SV.

Junko believes that she will pass her driving test.

When he was little, Mary believed that her son would become a doctor.

I believe that I will fail/pass the class. negative or positive

We all think that English is very important for newcomers to Canada.

I think that I can’t come tomorrow.  I don’t think that I can come tomorrow.

How can you say that? SIMPLE

*realize how

realize- understand something suddenly

how to drive – like a noun clause, sister of a noun clause

GRAMMAR

I don’t understand why I am sleepy today. NOUN CLAUSE- functions as a NOUN

I don’t understand math. NOUN

 

She knows how to fix her own car. functions as a NOUN, NOUN CLAUSE

She knows how to fix her own car. No SV – very natural sounding

She knows how she can fix her own car. ALTERNATIVE

 

We will practice keeping adverb clauses, noun clauses , and adjective clauses separate in our minds.
