EF6 8:30 March 4

Good morning, everyone.

We will get started at 8:30.

Today’s agenda

1.    Continue with noun clauses

2.    How to have a good life in English in Canada

MY PLAN:

Quiz#4 on Noun clauses on Friday

Test#2 Paragraph on general topic on Monday

adjective clauses – start tomorrow

who that which

noun clauses – that, what, how, why

‘that’ is used for lots of things in English

e.g.

Marie knows that her son is trying his best with his math homework.

‘that’ in a noun clause

Marie has a phone that has a seven-inch screen.

‘that’ in an adjective clause

Marie really likes that ring.

‘that’ is an pronoun

Marie really likes that.

‘that’ is an pronoun

‘That’ is a word that has many uses in English. Your challenge is figure out or least understand the different ways sentences can be put together. Understanding the mechanics of the sentences (the underlying structure) will help you become a better English user.

Just like learning any complex high-level skill, you must learn and then forget it. You learn it and practice it and get it into your bones and muscles and ears; then when you have that, you must forget the mechanics, forget the grammar, and just use it.

Many mid-level students get stuck thinking about English as a grammar system. They don’t move beyond that.

English is not a math problem- it’s a language.

How much English did you use yesterday?

active learning – talking and chatting to people,

passive learning – watching movies, TV, listening to music

There are people in this class who have not said a single word out loud in four weeks. Do you think that their English is getting better?

Fear is your enemy.

People learn languages socially. We are very social creatures.

Some people are shy.  Shyness is a fear of social judgement.

You have to push through that. You have to be brave.

Bravery means doing what you know is right even though you are afraid.

If you don’t push yourself, than you could easily live in Vancouver for 40 years and still have crappy English.

If you do push yourself, than you could easily pick up wonderful fluent English (with a nice accent) in a short amount of time.

If the people around you are not accepting and open-minded, then you are surrounding yourself with the wrong people.

You can find a few new friends and build up a little social group. You will feel better and more at home living in Canada.

meetup.com

- meeting people with similar interests

-hiking, photography, cycling, dog walking

build a new life in this country – language, social groups

Staying home with your mouth closed, hiding under the bed, is not healthy for you.

- pronunciation – only a few words will give you trouble

- phrasing – natural phrasing, authentic English

The secret is practice and making mistakes and trying again and having some courage and not being afraid.

Stop saying that you can’t.

Treat yourself like a little kid learning to tie her shoes.
