EF34 11:00 March9

Good morning, everybody.

We will get started at 11:00.

Today’s agenda:

1.    Review Test#3- narrative paragraph

2.    Adjective clauses

Quiz#5 (adjective clauses) on Thursday

Test#3 (narrative paragraph) on Friday

***

Spring Break is from March 15-26. We are back on Monday, March 29.

***

On Monday, March 29, I will be giving out midterm reports. You will need this report from me in order to register for the next term: April-June.

We will not have a class together on Monday, March 29.

You email me anytime between 11:00-1:15 on March 29, and I will email you back your midterm average (%) and my recommendation as to whether you should register for the next level or stay at this level.

Your midterm average will be based on the quizzes and tests we have done so far. Quiz 1,2,3,4,5. Test 1,2,3.

The pass mark for the class is 50%. That’s true for all of BC schools.

At the end of the course, if you have 50%+, you can move up.

The minimum average for early recommendation (midterm recommendation) is 65%. Our English department policy is anyone who is getting below 65% is probably not ready to move on.

You can figure out your own average

Quiz 1,2,3,4         x/3

Test1,2                 x/6

Scenario 1:

Quizzes:     1/3    2/3    2.5/3           3/3

Tests:         4/6    2/6

x\y  14.5/24  = 60.4%

NO EARLY RECOMMENDATION

Scenario 2:

Quizzes:     1.8/3           2/3    2/3    2.2/3

Tests:         4.5/6           4/6

16.5/24 = 68.8%

EARLY RECOMMENDATION

We might do a makeup (replacement, redo) quiz or test later in the course.

This will be a midterm report. We still have four weeks left to learn, do tests and quizzes, and get better.

My question: “Are you ready to succeed in the next level?”

Discussion from my other class:

Classroom learning can only teach you so much.

You have to get and live in English some. You have become familiar with real English.

I practice my guitar every day.

Practicing is not the same as playing music with people.

For me, playing music in a group with real people is 10X as useful as practicing by myself.

Both are important, but playing in a group is much more important than practicing by yourself.

In the same way, studying more grammar books is not going to help you as much as actually putting yourself in situations where you must communicate with other humans in English.

Are you afraid of that?

Are you nervous around English speakers?

Are you afraid of people who are different than you?

If yes, be brave and do it anyway.

Test#2

“Write a paragraph about a funny thing that happened when you were a kid.”

(100-150 words)

fun/funny – different meanings

fun- enjoyable “Hiking is fun.”

funny- humourous, laughing         “My aunt does funny impressions of other family members.”

“The movie was funny. We were all laughing.”

“Our English class is fun sometimes.”

* writing a paragraph – begin with a topic sentence

TOPIC:        “Write about a funny thing that happened when you were a

kid.”

Topic sentence (TS) – address the topic directly

I remember a very funny thing that happened when I was a kid.

My six brothers and five sisters all pretended that we could not hear or see my youngest brother. ... TELL THE STORY

* writing sentences – SIMPLE COMPOUND COMPLEX

Sometimes when students are writing paragraphs, they get carried away and the sentences go out the window.

Practice! You have to practice your sentences.

You can’t learn to write sentences by listening to me talk.

Practice and you will improve.

Don’t practice and stay the same.

It’s up to you. It’s your choice.

FOR SOME: The sentences that you are writing in your paragraphs are

not the sentences that we have been practicing in class.

You have to change if you want to get better.

The internet at the school is not good today.

Did you hear any of what I just said? You got the idea.
