Eng 10 Subjects and predicates

Sentence - subject + verb

subject + predicate

"The cute brown kitten with the white paws is asleep on the window sill."

"kitten" just the one word (noun) - main subject

"The cute brown kitten with the white paws" - noun plus anything modifying the noun - compete subject

"The cute brown kitten with the white paws is asleep on the window sill."

"The cute brown kitten with the white paws are asleep on the window sill." XXX


ADVICE: Always know what your main subject is. Then you will get the verb right more often. You have to check every sentence.

' apostrophe- shows possession

"Sarah's new kitten is really cute."
"My new guitar sounds nice."

a. imperative sentence, command, tell somebody to do something
"Come in."
"Open the door, please."
"Watch out!"
"Shut up!"
"Keep going."
"Go to bed!!!"

"You come in." implied subject

b. interrogative sentence, question
 "Are you happy?"

You finished your work.
Did you finish your work?

c. here / there
"Here is your phone."
"Here are your earrings."
"Here are your glasses."
"There is my sister."
"There are two deer."
"There are three kittens."

d. infinitives and gerunds
infinitive "to go" "to sleep" "to work"

"To work at Microsoft is my dream." INAUTHENTIC

gerund "going" "sleeping" "working"
"Working at Microsoft is my dream."  AUTHENTIC ENGLISH

"Snowboarding is really fun."
"To snowboard is really fun." Sounds weird
"Studying English is challenging sometimes."

challenging (adj) - hard, difficult

euphemism - polite vocab for a challenging topic

e. preposition - to, in, on, for, under, over
"The cat with the white paws and blue eyes are asleep." XXX

"The cat (with the white paws and blue eyes) is asleep."

"You can buy a car or lease one."
