Eng 10 Subject / predicate review


Underline the main subject once. Underline the main predicate twice.

e.g. Our school is on Fraser Street.

1.    The company wants to attract customers.
2.    The president (of the club) is Joan Mathews.
3.    Press this button to start the machine. Imperative sentence
4.    The elderly patient was given excellent care by the nurses in the hospital.
passive voice “My son was given a present.” subject is inactive
active voice “I gave my son a present.” subject does the verb

Style: Active voice sounds strong. Passive voice sounds weak.


5.    John, who is my best friend, had to give up his studies because his mother needed help with the store.
verb + preposition = phrasal verb
give up
give in
give out


6.    The 3 o’clock ferry to Nanaimo left 45 minutes late.
