PREWRITING - planning

1. Evaluate the topic
What does the teacher want me to write about?
What about the format? paragraph, essay
What's the topic?
What mode of writing? narrative, descriptive, process, persuasive, expository, compare/contrast
We have to choose.

Read the question!! Read every word carefully!!!

2. Generating ideas
Lists
Mindmapping
Brainstorming
Freewriting - no time in class really, creative writing, novel, poetry
Notes and discussion
Journal writing

3. Organizing your points
TIME (chronological)
SPACE (left to right, top to bottom, zoom in, zoom out)
or
IMPORTANCE (least to most important, most to least important, etc)


WRITING

4. Rough draft

Topic sentence - specific topic, controlling idea
Has to be on-topic.
Read the question again. Mirror some vocab from the question. Use synonyms.

Concluding sentence

5. Proofreading. Revising.
Check it! 

- verb tense
- spelling
- organizing
- punctuation
- capitalization
- singular and plural nouns
- #1 error - subject verb agreement

- sentence fragments
- run-on sentences

6. Good copy
No time in class to rewrite a paper.
Pass in the rough copy.
