didn’t know meaning of Egyptian characters- hieroglyphics

found the Rosetta Stone

they thought symbols were for ideas= like in Japanese

in fact, the heiroglt]yphics represented phonetic sounds
linguiats were able to find common names in the greek Cleopatra
found the same names in the Egyptian script
from that they were able to begin to read sounds.
