Write a simple sentence for each. Write your sentences on your own

paper.

Active and passive voice:- verbs

ACTIVE VOICE

Your aunt planted some flowers. active voice- the subject does/did the verb

He ate the cookies.

 

PASSIVE VOICE- not used as much, less common

The flowers were planted by your aunt. the subject does nothing, inactive, passive

The cookies were eaten by him.

 

passive voice- verbs more complicated, at least two words

 

The mechanic fixed the car. active voice

The car was fixed by the mechanic. passive voice

 

The basketball hit me.

I was hit by the basketball.

 

 

Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister. passive voice

swear in(v) – ritual, enter a high office/position, become a citizen, go to court

 

The judge swore in the new citizens. active voice

 

marriage – take vows, say your vows

If you are writing on a computer, how do you indent? What key do you press to indent?

Imperial – measurement – mile, foot, inch, gallon, pound

The US uses the Imperial system.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It’s easy to forget these details when you are focussed on writing.

Small group (4-5 people) discussion, chatting, casual talking

Share your ideas on the PLOS- your strengths and weaknesses

As a small group, discussion, asking questions- clarify points. Figure out meaning.

clarify(v) – clear(adj) – make an idea clear in your mind or to someone else

-         building vocabulary

-         finding synonyms-

e.g. impromptu- without planning, off-the-cuff

 

This will be an opportunity to talk in English about big ideas, concepts, challenging material.

Impromptu discussion is a challenge, and one that we all are called upon to meet daily.
