iv. -fact or statistic

Living creatures cannot survive for more than a few hours if their core temperature drops and they become hypothermic. TOPIC SENTENCE

v. -question (answered by thesis statement)

Have you ever clubbed a bird?

Have you ever gone hunting? For some people, it is not easy to kill an animal. TS

vi. -relevant quotation by a famous person

Barack Obama once said, “Never club a frozen pheasant.”

My mother said, “Never eat a chicken because we don’t want to kill them.”

Buddha said, “Life is suffering. We must have empathy for all living creatures.”

Books of quotations.- Have some quotations in your memory. It is very helpful to reference when you are writing.

vii. -relevant idiom from any language, proverb, saying

-don’t translate well, have a lot of meaning

In English we call someone who is afraid to do something a “chicken”. However, the boys didn’t act out of fear, but of empathy when they refused to harvest the pheasants.

Clincher – optional attention-getting device for ending the essay

-like a grabber but at the end of the essay

From yesterday’s essay that I wrote quickly:

In essence, BC is my chosen home because it offers so much. BC has a lot of chances to get good meaningful employment. Also, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth in terms of nature. Finally, BC has a rich tapestry of ethnicities, languages, and cultures. BC is the place for me.

CLINCHER - tone: friendly, serious, funny

BC is the place for me.

Come out and see for yourself!

I hope you find your ideal place to live.

Review your essay work. We will try one tomorrow. The topic will be an essay topic.

I will mark them gently. My main interest is that the sentences are good, real sentences.

Next, I want five short paragraphs.

Introductory paragraph

3 body paragraphs

Concluding paragraph

Good challenge!

The first time is always the hardest.

Tomorrow, we are going to jump off the diving board.

We are just kids jumping into the pool for the first time.
