Many people have not finished high school:
e.g. turned 19 before they could finish in BC, family trouble, health challenges (physical, mental, emotional, psychological), come from country with war, political unrest, have lived in Canada for a long time, working, raising kids, making money
Everyone is welcome in my class.
We are here to get a little better at English – for school, for life, for work, for yourself.
You should have a plan for yourself.
- improve English - writing, reading, listening, talking
- get a better job
- finish high school
- go to postsecondary (college or university)
THE MAIN THINGS WE WILL BE STUDYING:
a. writing
- very important, most important for school, high school, college, university, job, life
Being able to write well is a wonderful gift that you can give to yourself. I can help. I will teach you.
THREE SENTENCE TYPES
-SIMPLE
-COMPOUND
-COMPLEX
I will teach you these in great detail. I will answer all of your questions as well as I can. We will practice, practice, practice.
PARAGRAPHS- different kinds of paragraphs
- narrative writing – tell a story
- descriptive writing – describe something
- process/expository writing – teach someone how to do something
- persuasive writing – convince, tell your opinion
b. reading
- short stories
- non-fiction
- No novel for this class
c. listening and speaking
The daily class is mainly one hour of me talking.
I will speak at a normal pace, slightly slower than if I were talking with my friends.
Listen to CBC radio 690am. The announcers have a nice relaxed speaking pace/speed.
The online class feeling is different from classroom. I like to have people in a room, talking with each other, looking at each other, meet some new friends, make some new contacts.
We will do out best to connect.
-speaking- You talk as much as you want. Chime in. Join the conversation. Don’t be shy. Ask as many questions as you want.
“Sorry. I have a question. May I ask a question?” YES!! Don’t be shy.
I will be paying attention to who talks and who is silent.
Talkers do better learning English.
Don’t be a Silent Sam or Quiet Quan.
Be a Talking Tim and a Chatty Cathy.
Speaking out loud is very importance for your confidence.
Some people avoid speaking out loud. Don’t. Take every opportunity to speak English.
On Zoom, we are missing visual cues, subtle body language
We will do our best to connect.
We usually have a lot of fun in my classes. I hope you will have fun, feel relaxed, and learn a lot.
