Prepositions – usually short words, very powerful and important

- convey a lot of meaning

- a really good measure of how well you know English

i.e. People who struggle with prepositions usually are not getting enough exposure to real English in their life.


preposition usage is all idiomatic- doesn’t follow rules well


in/on/at/from/to/for – idiomatic


Jun lives on the Earth.

Prepositions are real challenge. However, learning about them and getting comfortable using them will really help your English.

Phrasal verbs- extremely important to learn 


verb + preposition

work + on “I have to work on my math.”

work + out – exercise

work + around – avoid a problem and keep working

work + for – employed, have a job “I work for the power company.” 

work + toward- strive


Changing the preposition changes the meaning a lot.


put + on – hold an event

put + off – postpone

put + out – bothered “I was really put out by the way you spoke to me.”

put+over+on -lie to, trick “The salesperson put one over on the customer.”

put+in – contribute money , apply for something “I put in for a vacation.”


These phrasal verbs are the heart of English.




Persuasive paragraphs


Types of paragraphs:

narrative- tell a story

descriptive – describe, 5 senses

process – teach

persuasive – convince, persuade, explain your position, make the reader understand why you think the way you do

Persuasive writing – give 3,4,5 good reasons why we hold an opinion


e.g. Why you should learn English.

look up – move eyes up, research

look out – watch for, be careful  Look out! There is a tree falling over.

look out for – watch out for someone else, keep an eye on someone else. “I will look for you.” I will take care of you.

look after – Parents look after their children.

look up to – respects ‘Shirin looks up to her mother.’


look down – move eyes downward ‘The kid is looking down at the ground.’

look down on – does not respect, judges harshly ‘The rich woman looks down on her poor neighbours.”


look into – investigate, gather information  ‘The police will look into the robbery.’ ‘I will look getting some new pickups for my guitar.’ ‘You should start looking into what colleges you may want to apply to.’

Finally, when we wear  a mask around an elderly person or a person with compromised health, for example, they - makes people feel safer, more comfortable.
