Free advice #9: Looking for rules will be frustrating. You
can learn about prepositions by listening and talking.
Prepositions are real challenge. However, learning about
them and getting comfortable using them will really help your English.

Phrasal verbs- extremely important to learn
verb + preposition
work + on “I have to work on my math.”
work + out – exercise
work + around – avoid a problem and keep working
work + for – employed, have a job “I work for the power company.”
work + toward- strive
Changing the preposition changes the meaning a lot.
put + on – hold an event
put + off – postpone
put + out – bothered “I was really put out by the way you
spoke to me.”
put+over+on -lie to, trick “The salesperson put one over on
the customer.”
put+in – contribute money , apply for something “I put in
for a vacation.”
These phrasal verbs are the heart of English.
Persuasive paragraphs
Types of paragraphs:
narrative- tell a story
descriptive – describe, 5 senses
process – teach
persuasive – convince, persuade, explain your position, make
the reader understand why you think the way you do
Persuasive writing – give 3,4,5 good reasons why we hold an
opinion
e.g. Why you should learn English.
