We are down to the last few days of class.

Wednesday – prepositions, phrasal verbs, persuasive writing,

Tomorrow we will do the optional replacement test for the people who signed up for it. I responded to everyone who emailed me about this.

 

Thursday – grammar review, Final test- persuasive paragraph

 

Friday – no class together.

          - Email by after 11:30 and I will send you your final mark.

          - I will put your marks into the office on Friday afternoon.

 

You can figure out your own mark by doing the average of the quizzes and tests.

Prepositions – usually short words, very powerful and important

                     - convey a lot of meaning

                     - a really good measure of how well you know English

i.e. People who struggle with prepositions usually are not getting enough exposure to real English in their life.

 

preposition usage is all idiomatic- doesn’t follow rules well

 

in/on/at/from/to/for – idiomatic

 

Jun lives on the Earth.

Jun lives in Canada.

Jun lives in BC.

Jun lives in Vancouver.

Jun lives on Main Street.

June lives 2345 at Main Street.

The only to learn these is through usage of and exposure to authentic English.

Free advice #9: Looking for rules will be frustrating. You can learn about prepositions by listening and talking.

 

Prepositions are real challenge. However, learning about them and getting comfortable using them will really help your English.

Phrasal verbs- extremely important to learn

 

verb + preposition

work + on “I have to work on my math.”

work + out – exercise

work + around – avoid a problem and keep working

work + for – employed, have a job “I work for the power company.”

work + toward- strive

 

Changing the preposition changes the meaning a lot.

 

put + on – hold an event

put + off – postpone

put + out – bothered “I was really put out by the way you spoke to me.”

put+over+on -lie to, trick “The salesperson put one over on the customer.”

put+in – contribute money , apply for something “I put in for a vacation.”

 

These phrasal verbs are the heart of English.

 

 

 

Persuasive paragraphs

 

Types of paragraphs:

narrative- tell a story

descriptive – describe, 5 senses

process – teach

persuasive – convince, persuade, explain your position, make the reader understand why you think the way you do

Persuasive writing – give 3,4,5 good reasons why we hold an opinion

 

e.g. Why you should learn English.

2.    increased job opportunities, business opportunities

3.    more able to make new friends and companions

4.    more opportunities for education and studying

5.    everyday life – shopping, telephone, restaurant, doctor
