Midterm Recommendations

We are at the halfway point in the term.

Interim- midterm, halfway point in the term

The midterm recommendaion is a snapshot of how you are doing at the moment.

Registration for Quarter 4 courses (April-June) will begin Monday, March 27th. You will be able register via the South Hill website as usual. You will be emailed a link soon.

In order to register, you need a recommendation from your teacher, me. On Friday, I will give you an interim recommendation for which English class you should register for in Quarter 4. I will put your recommendation into a spreadsheet for the advisors.

The interim recommendation will be based on the quizzes and tests you have done so far this term. Also, I will give you a spoken mark out of 10 based on how much speaking you do in class.

REMINDER:

Tests are worth double what quizzes are worth.

OPTIONS- Stay or move up

EF3- EF3 OR EF4

EF4- EF4 OR EF5

The South Hill English department strongly recommends that students who are marginally passing (50-65%) not advance to the next level.

Therefore, the minimum average required to receive a recommendation for early registration for the next level is 65%. This is to allow stronger students first shot at registering. This is also to dissuade students who are not ready from registering in a class that may be too high for them.

We want the strongest students to have an opportunity to register first.

If you’re below, you will have wait a while to register for Quarter 4.

NOTE: 65% is the reasonable cutoff point for early registraton starting tomorrow.

However, the final passmark for courses in BC is 50%. That is your final mark on the last day.

You can move up to the next level with 50% at the end of the course, but I don’t think that is strong enough. You have to get better at your English.

IMPORTANT: The minimum average for a recommendation to register early for the next level is 65%.

The final passmark is 50%.

We have four weeks left in our course. You can change your mark significantly depending on the quizzes and tests yet to come. We have about 3 quizzes and 3-4 tests yet to come this term. Plus you have another in-class spoken mark.

You can bring your mark up.

Also, you can bring your mark down.

This is the halfway point.

REMINDER: You will have an opportunity to replace one of your quiz marks in the final week of the course. You will have an opportunity to replace one of your test marks in final week of the course.

SCENARIO #1

67%

65%+ = OK for the next level

SCENARIO #2

40%

65%- = this is good level to work at, stay

You can figure out roughly your own average right now, except for spoken. Add up your quizzes and tests. Guess at your spoken mark.

We will talk on Friday. We will have one-on-one meetings.
