EF67 Class 17 - verb tense refresh- simple present, present progressive

Verb tenses

                     -use it all day long

                     - habit, usual activity, normal, habitual, daily action

 

action verbs

Mei drinks green tea. – habit, daily, usually

You take care of your grandchildren. -always

Sarah does yoga.

I play guitar.

 

-subject verb agreement (important to remember)

I play guitar.

You play guitar.

He/She/Doris plays guitar.

 

-non-action verbs- state of being, truth, fact

Sarah is a doctor.

She is 53 years old.

Doug lives in Nova Scotia.

2 plus 2 equals four.

Victoria is the capital of BC.

 

 

**present progressive/continuous ‘ing’- happening right now or currently, suggests impermanence, impermanent, temporary action or state

auxiliary verb + ‘ing’ verb

is walking

The kid is walking on the snow.

The kids are walking on the snow.

 

She is studying dental assisting at VCC. – currently, but not necessarily at the this moment

 

Al is learning guitar. – these days

They are building a house.- these days, currently

 

Use present progresive to suggest an action that is happening now but is not going to continue forever.

 

COMPARE:

Sarah lives in Canada. – will stay here

Sarah is living in Canada. –will not stay forever

 

I live in Canada now.

I am living in Canada now. – not sure

 

Feroz lives in Seattle,and Nahid is living in Vancouver.

 

I am living in Vancouver, but I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I would like to stay.

 

Kai normally plays soccer, but he is playing a lot of volleyball these days.

 

I study English.   -forever

I am studying English. -endgoal- Most people

 

I do yoga. – forever- Most people.

I am doing yoga.
